In America (DVD) ... released 15 March, 2004 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / In America stars the incandescent Samantha Morton and Paddy Considine as two young Irish parents who have lost their only son. Trying to run away from their grief, they move (illegally) to a junkie-infested apartment building in New York City with their two daughters, Christy (Sarah Bolger) and Ariel (Emma Bolger). Though they struggle with meagre jobs and suffocatingly hot weather, a friendship with an artist in an apartment below them (Djimon Hounsou) becomes a catalyst that allows them to rebuild their family. In America is splendidly acted throughout--of particular note are the two girls, real-life sisters whose on-screen charisma is clearly a family trait. But it's Morton who anchors the movie; her every emotion seems to glow from her skin. The commitment of the actors keeps the movie compelling, despite some dangerously sentimental patches. --Bret Fetzer

In America, released in 2002, tells the story of a young Irish family trying to make a new life for themselves in Manhattan, NY in the early 1980’s. We begin to learn a little of this families past within the first scene; narrated partly by Christie the elder child. The family actually enter America illegally by driving over from Canada; coaching their two young children Ariel and Christie on what to say in front of the immigration officials. Christie, who is 10, appears to have a strong spiritual connection to her brother Frankie, who has died. Frankie told her she only had three wishes in life; a thought that she absolutely believed in after his ...

'In America' is one of those films that captured my attention when I first saw it's trailers. Unfortunately not a lot has been said about it and it hasn't been widely advertised so many people are still in the dark about what it is actually about. I finally tracked it down on my online rental DVD shop and credit where credit is due, this is an amazing film. It met so many of my expectations and more. So without further ado here is my review that will hopefully persuade you to watch it! *** The Plot *** Johnny, Sarah, Christy and Ariel are a family in search of a new life. After losing their son 'Frankie' in an accident they leave their home country ...
