Last Action Hero (DVD) ... O'Brien ... / DVD released 08 March, 2004 at Uca Catalogue / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / John McTiernan (The Hunt for Red October) imaginatively directs this action comedy, which is an interesting failure with some fascinating ironies that make it well worth seeing. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays both a character named Jack Slater--a fictional cop hero who exists only in the movies (ie, the movies seen by the characters in this movie) and the actor who plays Jack Slater in the real world (ie, in the movie we're actually watching). McTiernan's hall-of-mirrors effect is fun, though Last Action Hero never quite identifies itself as a pure action movie, science fiction, a kid's movie, or anything else. (The expensive film suffered at the box office as a result and was roundly criticised for this ambivalence.) What lingers in the memory, however, is Schwarzenegger, playing himself, being confronted by Slater for having created an alter ego for film in the first place. It's a provocative moment: how often have we seen a major star blatantly wrestle with his actor's legacy in this way? --Tom Keogh

... predictable. Arnie runs around killing bad guys with the kid in tow and lots of guns get fired and lots of things explode and it looks all very exciting. The problem here is that the movie is meant to be a parody of the usual violent Arnie film but just isn’t funny. One minute the film is ultra violent and the next its like a Disney flick...it just doesn’t work. You can’t get into the action because of all the lame attempts at humour and you can’t find it funny because of the violent side of things. C...more

Premium Review Last Action Hero (DVD): Awful!! (264 words)

This is a true disaster. At the time critics trying to rescue it said things like, "You have to be admire Schwarzenegger for being able to make fun of himself." But I don't think he was. I think this was Arnie taking himself far too seriously, and thinking he could act just because he had had some successful films. Its about a boy who idolizes a film character, who is the most cliched all-action hero type imaginable. ie never ever loses, walks out of explosions unharmed, drops 300 foot without breaking his stride, shoots people between the eyes without looking etc. etc. To this point Arnie is perhaps mocking the kind of character he normally plays, ...

Last Action Hero must surely rate as Arnie’s worst movie ever. Based on an incredibly silly and overcomplicated plot it never seems to make up its mind on whether it is one of his usual violent offerings or a lame attempt at comedy whilst achieving neither end to any great effect. The Plot... A little boy gets to see a special sneak preview of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s (excuse the spelling) latest movie. but gets sucked into the movie and must take part in all the goings on. Well, this film was a big disapointment, Arnold Schwarzenegger has tries to mix action with comedy, a true disaster on his part, he should stick to what he is best at. The film Last Action Hero was supposed to play the image of real life and movie life, in which arnie was pulled into the real world from his movie world, it really did not make much sense, the whole part of the film was what? A young boy addicted to these action movies staring Arnie, is given a gold ticket, his ticket the movie world, it`s just all pointless, with arnie and the kid going from movie world to real world trying to catch the bad guy. Silly one liners spoil this and the acting just ...
