The Lawnmower Man (DVD) ... Lawnmower Man was hailed as a CGI (Computer Generated Image) breakthrough. It's fascinating to consider the effects in a historical context, knowing it came just a year after T2: Judgment Day and was followed by Jurassic Park a year later. Written and directed by Bill Leonard, this was intended to showcase how realistic digital likenesses and landscapes had become. Little did they know that Toy Story was already in pre-production! The story hangs on the concept that a scientist gain (Pierce Brosnan) is drafted in to utilise the technology for governmental. As with all top-secret government projects in the movies, it all goes horribly wrong. Forced to progress from a chimp to a human subject, Brosnan secretly recruits local backwards boy and lawnmower pusher Jobe (Jeff Fahey). The increases in intelligence are alarming. He learns Latin in two hours, becomes an object of sexual desire (all it takes is cowboy boots apparently), and then develops telepathic and telekinetic abilities. Some very overt religious analogy is in evidence. Jobe's beatings by a priest give way to an eventual crucifixion on the spinning wheel that allows him to enter Virtual Reality. Will he be resurrected for a sequel? Such questions were what Stephen King took extreme exception to when his name was placed before the title. A lawsuit took care of that. What the film ought to be remembered and appreciated for though are the visuals, which undoubtedly advanced the arcade and home computer game industry. --Paul Tonks

... enhancing drugs and virtual reality on a simple-minded gardener. Pierce Brosnan, in his pre-Bond days, plays the role of Dr. Lawrence Angelo. A part which shows he was still quite a cool character in those days. He puts the gardener (Jobe is a simple man that gets tormented by the townsfolk and beaten regularly by his caretaker, the town priest) on an extensive schedule of learning, and quickly he becomes brilliant. But at this point the gardener has a few ideas of his own on how the research should continue, and the sc...more

Premium Review The Lawnmower Man (DVD): Stephen King Film?? (125 words)

As a Stephen King Fan I was a bit shocked that he allowed his name to be used against this film. The original Stephen King Novella was about a person who came round to peoples houses and instead of using a lawnmower to do the lawn got down on his hands and knees and ate the grass, like a goat! Very bizare story in it's own right but the film has nothing to do with that at all. The film is all about a 'simple minded' guy who with the help of drugs and virtual reality becomes super human and tries to talke over the world. Very predictable but the special effects (at the time of release !) make the film watchable. ...

The dvd itself is of excellent standard, containing things like directors commentary cast reviews etc but you tell it was an early attempt because you can see by the quality of the contents and movie it just isnt up to todays standards. The disc is dual layered so you have to flip it a few times to access some of the extras. The film itself was based on a short story by Stephen King and contained some remarkable special effects for when the film was made. A brief description of the film, A scientist performs experiments involving intelligence enhancing drugs and virtual reality on a simple-minded gardener. Pierce Brosnan, in his pre-Bond days, ...

Premium Review The Lawnmower Man (DVD): Lawnmower Man - Virtual Reality at its best (280 words)

This film is an adaptation of a story by Stephen King, but has nothing to do with the original book (about a man who eats the stuff he mows). The lawnmower man of the title is Jobe, played by Jeff Fahey, who is retarded and earns a crust by doing the gardening. One of his customers is Pierce Brosnan (not a role which really brings out his best acting) who plays a scientist working for a secret govenment agency. When Brosnan's work, which uses virtual reality to train chimpanzees for combat scenarios, hits major problems, he turns his attention to the lawnmower man. Brosnan hopes that he can make Jobe more normal using his virtual reality ...
