Save the Last Dance (DVD) ... / DVD released 19 June, 2001 at Paramount / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Closed-captioned, Colour, Dolby, DVD-Video, NTSC, Subtitled, Widescreen / Save the Last Dance enjoyed a profitable release in early 2001, with box-office earnings that exceeded anyone's expectations. Its performance illustrates the staying power of a formulaic film that avoids the pitfalls and clichés that would otherwise render it forgettable. Since there's nothing new here, you'll appreciate the original quirks in a character-based plot that's just around the corner from Flashdance, and just as familiar. Sara (Julia Stiles) gave up a promising ballet career when her mother was killed while rushing to attend her daughter's crucial audition to Juilliard; Sara blames herself for the accident, and at her new, mostly African-American high school in Chicago, she's uncertain of her future. Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas) has no such doubts; his own future is bright, and his attraction to Sara is immediate; they connect (predictably), and Sara's dormant funk emerges, with Derek's coaching, as she learns hip-hop dancing in a local club. Obligatory subplots are equally routine: Derek's sister (Kerry Washington) is a single mom struggling with her child's absentee father; Derek's best friend (Fredro Starr) feels trapped in his gangster lifestyle; and Sara's once-estranged father (Terry Kinney) is doing his best to correct past mistakes. Within the confines of this standard follow-your-dream drama, director Thomas Carter capitalises on a script that allows these characters to be real, intelligent, and thoughtful about their lives and their futures. It's obvious that Stiles's dancing was intercut with that of a professional double, but that illusion hardly matters when the rest of the film's so earnestly positive and genuine. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

As her father persuades her to start ballet school again, and Derek works towards becoming a doctor despite the depravity all around him, the pair find solace and comfort in the dance scene in the club as night, where they make friends.....and enemies! What the film does well is take the well known plot of miserable teens finding a way to fulfil their dreams and rehash it a bit to make it inter-racial, using dancing as the key moulding element. Sara (Julia Stiles) has one dream, she wants to get into Juilliard and become a world famous ballerina. On the day of her big audition she rows with her single mum as she has to work back and won't be able to make it in time to support her daughter. Knowing the importance of the audition to her daughter, she rushes to the audition but unfortunately is killed in a tragic road accident. Having lost her mum and given up on her dream of being a ballerina after failing her audition, she finds herself begrudgingly relocating to the rough south side of Chicago to live with her musician father. Already struggling with the loss of her mother, she has to quickly get ...

Do you enjoy a little something to help you escape from the realities of everyday life? No, I don’t mean the stuff that comes in a bottle, or that you mix with tobacco. I mean romance and fantasy; the kind that’s made in Hollywood. Save The Last Dance is exactly that. Romance and fantasy. Sure, there are issues raised in the film, none of which are original, and there are too many for one film. None of them are really dealt with in a way that gives us any understanding of the problems surrounding the characters, there are too many stereotypes and we’ve seen it all before, but as a feel good film, it’s a winner. If you’ve ...

This is one of those "feel good" movies about following your dreams which I found very enjoyable, albeit that a lot of the tale was quite predictable. There were a few twists and turns along the way, but I think it is obvious that things will work out in the end. Sara (Julia Stiles) is a budding ballerina, whose dream is to attend Juilliard. At the beginning, she comes across as almost selfish ( I felt). Her single mother has worked long and hard to give her a middle class, suburban upbringing and allow her the opportunity to pursue her dreams, yet Sara (although loving her mother dearly) seems almost brattish when her mother has to work later, on ...
