I bought this product as I had always liked Philips shavers, however this isn't the best. The shave was pretty decent, that was until I didn't shave for a couple of days and then I felt the shaver struggled to give me a really close shave. Subsequently, it took me longer to shave than I would have liked, but for everyday shaving then it is not too bad. It did leave some parts of my skin feeling a little sore immediately after shaving, although this eased during the day. The shaving head cover could do with being stronger and if you are using it plugged in, then the power cable isn't as long as it should be. This shaver has the feeling of a poorly made product that doesn't feel as if will last the test of time and I am quite disappointed with it. I cannot really recommend this product, which is a shame as most of the Philips shavers have been excellent.
Philips is a huge brand when it comes to many items so when I saw this shaver going for just less than thirty five pounds at John Lewis recently I wanted to make the purchase quickly. At first I noticed how nice the product was to pick up and use. You have this black back and front and where the actual shaving heads are is this grey metallic colour which sort of highlights where the heads are. The shaver has three heads at the top of the item and these are really good because they can move in various angles resulting in a much closer and suitable shave for everyone involved. At the bottom of the shaver is where you charge the item up and it takes around an hour for a full charge to take place and once it has you have about a fortnights worth of shaving to take part in until it needs a further charge. I have to admit that when I shave I tend to take my time to make sure I do a good job so perhaps this does result in the shaver lasting perhaps a shorter time frame then most would anticipate. Some shavers I looked when browsing for a new shaver were those which were quite expensive but had very little to offer in terms of cleaning the item. When I got this shaver I was given these tiny brushes to help clean the heads on the shaver and they are definitely a good extra they have added. The three heads have a cleaning destination where all the hair goes into and you can take make this come open and you can empty out the excess hair and then clean around the blades and see if you can make them work better. You have on the back of the item a pop up trimmer and this is very useful for when you want to take away those stubborn side burns and make sure you have a more accurate hair line there. I find the shaver good for the smaller hairs on the face but I have found that if you have hair over a certain length you have issues removing it. I also have found that the shaver if you push too hard can actually leave this type of burn on the face. The item is kind of heavy when picking the product up. The product is 11cm in depth and 24cm in height so the product is quite bulky in appearance and how it feels. I think the grips do help provide confidence in the shaver and because the charging time is so short it helps you as well when you are shaving.
I received this Philips HQ6990 shaver around 9 months ago. Since then I have used this approximately every 5 days. This shaver provides a very comfortable shave and it is very effective. I have found that this shaver gives a very close shave when first charged. However, after about 6 weeks of use the shaver noticeably misses hairs and feels generally much weaker, but this is to be expected. This can be sorted by charging causing it to go back to full power. The shaver works to an extent for 2 - 3 months regular use without charging, but I charge around monthly because of the above reason. Compared to other shavers I find that the battery is fully charged relatively fast from empty, this takes about 3 - 4 hours from empty. It is also useful that the LED light signals when it is fully charged. The shaver is quite quiet and is very comfortable to hold. Generally, the main head will get to most hairs but occasionally you can use the 'pop up' head to get to some harder to reach hairs.
This is a joint review with my husband, as obviously I can't realistically test a male shaver myself. I bought this from Amazon for my husband as his old Philips rotary shaver was well past its best and it didn't seem worth buying new heads for. There is a cheaper model than this particular one, but it's worth paying a few pounds extra for this model as it has a one hour charging time for 30 minutes of shaving - he hates a shaver that takes hours and hours to charge. The next one down in the range takes 8 hours to charge, not good when he's in a hurry! The colour is black and grey, and it has a rubbery textured grip on the back, to help prevent slippage. On the front it has an LED charging light. It's not washable under the tap, but it does come with a cleaning brush. It also comes with a protection cap. Advised replacement time for new heads is every two years. Here are the shaver's features, as listed on Amazon: ~The dual blade system lifts hairs to cut comfortably below skin level ~Reflex action system automatically adjusts to every curve of your face and neck ~Full width pop up trimmer, perfect for grooming sideburns and moustache ~ The ergonomically designed grip enables easy handling for a comfortable shave Here's my husband's verdict: "It does give a very close shave. It's good on the face area, but not fantastic on the neck. That might be because I daren't press on too much under the chin as it causes razor burn on the more sensitive skin. The pop up trimmer gives a good clean cut on sideburns, but I don't have a moustache to try it on. It's comfortable and well balanced to hold and doesn't slip out of my grip. Overall it gives me a much closer shave than my old Philips rotary. It doesn't do the neck as good as it claims, but it's a good shaver for the price. In general I'm quite satisfied and would give it four stars for performance and the fact that it has a short charge time." Finally, I can add that he is definitely looking smoother these days, so a good buy from my point of view! This shaver is currently £37.49 on Amazon and has 2 years guarantee. Replacement heads are £30.00 on Amazon, or start at £23.99 from other suppliers, but unlike Amazon they probably wouldn't do free delivery.
Features: Super Lift & Cut technology; Reflex Action system; Individually floating heads; Corrosion-free heads; Detachable bracket; Silent power; Vibration free; Hair-collecting chamber; Replacement head: HQ55.
