Advantages: Really clean teeth

Disadvantages: cost

I thought an electric toothbrush was a bit of a gimmick until I tried the Braun 3D Plaque remover, this is a brilliant electronic toothbrush. The brush head not only oscillates but it also moves backwards and forwards at high speed which effectively removes more plaque between the teeth than oscillation alone so the maker says. The toothbrush comes with a Oral B indicator brush head.

I cannot tell you the effective difference in use between the basic electronic brush and the 3D brush as I have not used the basic electronic brush. What I can say is that after using the brush my teeth feel the same as when I have been to the dentist for a polish, clean and smooth.

I asked my dentist about the effectiveness of the electronic toothbrushes to which he says they are vastly superior to hand brushing. He also told me that the brush head will last for about 12 months even though the indicator on the brush fades (indicating replacement) after about 3 months of normal use. The replacement brush heads are quite expensive at about £7.00 each.

Using the brush takes a little while to get used to as the sensation of the oscillating brush head on the teeth is a rather strange or even uncomfortable feeling. The brush has a built in timer of 2 minutes which is supposed to be the optimum brushing time. After 2 minutes of use the motor will pulse for about three seconds indicating that the brush has been used for 2 minutes. The brush does not need to be on for the whole 2 minute session for the timer to initiate; any pause of up to 30 seconds, for example to rinse, is taken into account.

It is advisable not to turn the brush on until it is placed in the mouth unless you like cleaning toothpaste off the bathroom walls!

The brush can be left on charge when not in use by being placed onto the base/charge unit. All in all this is an excellent brush and I would definitely recommend it.

Like the tip about not turning it on too early!

I almost want to go and buy one myself, but I'm too lazy to.
