Braun Oral B8900
When I was a child, I remember asking my mother how old she was, and received the reply, 'As old as my tongue and a little older than my teeth.'
Well, as someone born in the post-war years, around the time when sugar come off rationing, I hope I can continue to say that for a few more decades. But honestly, we had sugar with everything! In our tea, on our cereal, with oranges, bananas, even tomatoes. And the dentists were drill-happy too. So now it's a case of doing my best to undo the damage, or at least to prevent further deterioration.
You are wondering about how this links to the product being reviewed? Despite all this, thanks to the NHS dentists, I still have need of this excellent product.
Packaging:
There was rather a lot of packaging, not all of which is recycleable. But this packaging did ensure that the contents were totally safe. The brush came in a strong, cellophane-wrapped cardboard box, with clear information on the outside about what you were buying, and small compartments inside, which prevented the contents from rattling around and getting broken.
Contents:
The toothbrush came with an easy to use charging unit and a wall unit, should you wish to hang your brush box up on the wall. The charger unit links to the 'shaver socket' in the bathroom, where the brush can be re-charged overnight. A light in the toothbrush handle turns red when the brush needs recharging (after about two weeks, if used twice a day). The light turns green when the brush is ready to use again. The charger unit also contains a box that can hold the range of accessories that came with the toothbrush, or, if you prefer, the spare toothbrush heads that also came.
A fascinating range of accessories were in the box:
1. A precision clean brush head (This is the 'normal brush'. Spare brushes are provided. Replacement ones can be purchased at Boots.)
2. A bright brush head (you use this to give your teeth an extra bright polish, but use if with caution as it can be a little rough on the gums.)
3. A dual-clean brush head (This is like a double brush head, designed to clean your teeth and your gums simultaneously. I find this rather too large to use comfortably.)
4. An inter-space brush head. (This is a very small brush head whose bristles can slide between your teeth, great for reaching those odd bits of carrot or whatever!).
5. A tongue freshener (This is like a scraper for your tongue, an item in one's mouth which is at risk of neglect.)
6. An inter-dental cleaner (Use this head for the special plastic tooth picks which are also supplied. But be careful. You could even use this head without power. Three packs are included in the pack.)
7. A small handbook, offering advice about how best to use your toothbrush.
How to use:
Apply a pea-sized piece of toothpaste to the precision clean brush head. Any kind of toothpaste will be fine, so that is up to your individual preference. Put your brush head onto your teeth before switching the brush on, or you may end up with toothpaste flying around the room!
There are three possible modes: clean, sensitive or polish, and you can shift between each mode by pressing the button on the handle. Guide your brush slowly from tooth to tooth, and also round your gums. Do not apply extra pressure. The brush will do all the work. After 30 seconds, you will hear a short stuttering sound, to remind you to clean all four quadrants of your mouth. Each quadrant should be gently brushed for 30 seconds. A longer sound will indicate when the desired two minutes has elapsed.
Summary:
With all these accoutrements, it is possibly to achieve a dazzling gleam to your pearly whites every time, so important for the protection of both teeth and gums. It provides an outstanding means of fighting plaque, the big enemy of your gums and teeth.
With luck and care, you should keep your teeth for many years to come.

- 08/10/09 So much choice! Which head, which setting, do I want super bright teeth today? I can just about lift my toothbrush to my mouth first thing in the morning! I love the charging lights though - I wish my toothbrush had this feature. Great review. |
