Oral-B Advance Power 400
Advantages: low cost, good clean for your teeth
Disadvantages: only comes with one toothbrush head, no plastic cover for toothbrush head.
I've been wanting to upgrade from a manual to an electric toothbrush for quite a while. My teeth have suffered for a few years thanks to two pregnancies within a couple of years. I believe the saying is have a baby lose a tooth. Between my morning sickness and my sweet food cravings, I ended up having a tooth pulled, and my teeth have been vulnerable ever since.
The main thing putting me off swapping was cost. I would walk past toothbrushes in boots or browse on amazon, and think 'how much?' and then remember the kids needed new shoes or something. My son actually prodded me into buying this toothbrush, one each for me and my husband. We were shopping in costco and he had been talking to me for a while about electric toothbrushes, and he somehow spotted these, at a great cost of just £7 each. As this was with the two pencil batteries too to operate it, I figured it was not that big an outlay to give it a try.
I see on amazon looking today, they are between £12.50, and £40, so it is worth looking round to see what sort of price you can get it for if you decide to try it.
Lookswise, this is quite chunky, but you don't have a stand as well to recharge your toothbrush between uses. The handle is comfortable to hold in my hand. It is textured so I don't feel I will drop it when I am using it. The colour of my brush is blue and white, which is fine. I don't really care what it looks like as long as it does a good job. The unit is well sealed so I am not worried water or toothpaste will get into the unit when I am using it.
The brush is switched on by pressing a button on the front of the brush. There are no special features such as a timer on this model, but I try and clean my teeth for the two minutes that dentists advise. My teeth feel quite clean long before this, but I keep going.
The brush came with one brush head. This is a precision clean head, which is slightly cupped to fit around your teeth. I have been using this brush for about 7 weeks, and I am starting to feel it needs changing now as it is looking a bit flayed out and my teeth are not feeling quite as clean as they did at the start of using the brush.
Replacement heads are available on amazon at a cost of £21.50 for 8, or just over £15 for 4 of them. This is slightly more than I would have paid for a toothbrush before this model, but not so much it is prohibitive to getting them.
I was impressed with the brush from the first use. I felt my teeth were as clean as if I had just got back from a dentist clean and polish. I use whitening toothpaste normally, but my teeth seem a lot brighter and feel a lot cleaner using this brush. It did feel quite powerful at first and I wasn't sure I would get used to the strong sensation of the rotating brush against my gums, but it is very natural to me now. If I use a manual toothbrush now my teeth do not feel clean at all.
I was concerned that the battery would run down very quickly, but it is still going strong after almost 2 months of use.
While I cannot compare it to a rechargeable toothbrush as I have not experienced using one, I am more than happy to recommend this toothbrush to someone who is looking at starting with a basic model. My only niggle with it is I wish that it had come with a plastic cover to put over the toothbrush head. My children both got battery powered toothbrushes in their Christmas stockings, and I find the plastic cover really handy and hygienic, especially when travelling to stay with their grandparents. It is a small niggle though, and doesn't really spoil my opinion of this being a great unit for someone who is looking for a budget option.
Summary: I will get my money back by needing less work done at the dentists.
