Advantages: cleans well
Disadvantages: expensive
A few years ago our family switched from using manual toothbrushes to a Braun electric one. The main reason for the switch was due to a promotional offer. The electric toothbrush was reduced to under £10 from around £25 as the design was being updated. This seemed like a really good deal. An electric toothbrush definitely does a better job of cleaning teeth than a manual one as it rotates a lot more quickly and the small brush heads are able to get between teeth. The toothbrush came with 2 free brush heads too so we were all set to start cleaning.
The real expense comes when you need to replace the brush heads after about 3 months. When I found out the cost of replacement heads I was truly shocked! At about £3.75 each they are much more expensive than a manual toothbrush. However I really think it is worth the expense.
The toothbrush heads come in either packs of 2, 4 or 8. The brush heads are all white with bristles that have a blue stripe down each side. As you use the brush the stripe gradually fades and the bristles begin to fray, then it is time to buy a new one. I really like this idea, as it would be easy to carry on with the same brush when it is past its best. The brush heads are made of plastic, as you would expect, with a hole in the bottom, which fits easily onto the toothbrush. Only brush heads made by Braun will fit Braun electric toothbrushes and there are no cheaper alternatives. Different coloured plastic rings are included in each pack so that each member of the family can have a different colour enabling you to recognise your own brush.
Brush heads designed especially for children are also available at the same cost. These come in a variety of designs such as Disney characters or buzz lightyear. It certainly encourages my children to clean their teeth! Children’s brush heads are the same price as those intended for adults and have the same bristles. I would have liked them to be softer as they are intended for young children. It is possible to buy replacement heads with soft bristles but these are white and not so interesting for children.
The toothbrush heads come packaged in a clear strong plastic pack, which is really difficult to open, and you will probably need scissors. Anyone with difficulty manipulating their hands will really struggle. I wish manufactures would take note and make packaging more user friendly! Once out of the pack the brush heads are very easy to fit onto the toothbrush. I find the heads need replacing about every 3 month more frequently for the children’s brushes.
At the moment Boots are selling these for £7.99 for a pack of 2 or £24 99 for a pack of 8. There are sometimes 3 for 2 offers in Boots so it is worth stocking up if you can afford to! I have price checked and there seems to be little difference in the price where ever you get them.

- 20/10/04 I too couldn't use a manual toothbrush anymore. But now I buy 'cheap' battery toothbrushes and they seem to work OK. Good for children aren't they?
