Advantages: Excellent cleaning

Disadvantages: Cannot use whitening toothpastes

The Braun Oral-B Ultra Plaque Remover is an excellent toothbrush, and nobody who has tried it will want to revert to a manual brush. It just does the job very very much better. We have used ours for over two years now and have noticeably cleaner teeth, healthier gums and better reports from the dentist. Cleaning is not only more effective but much easier too, with hard to reach places much more accessible. The brush head is small, and it moves in an ideal way for safe cleaning, with a timer so that you don't overdo it and an indicator which shows when it needs to be replaced. A pack of two new brush heads costs £7.99 from Argos, but I don't consider this much more expensive than two good quality manual brushes, and there may also be an overall reduction in dental charges.

I found the small instruction book very useful, and it is vital to read it before starting because the procedure for brushing is actually quite different from the method used with a manual brush. However, one important thing which the booklet does not tell you is that you must not use whitening toothbrushes with the Oral-B Ultra Plaque Remover. When I tried this I was horrified to find that it resulted in dark grey foam all around my mouth, and thought that my fillings were dissolving! I contacted customer support and was reassured that it was nothing to do with my fillings, but that certain ingredients in whitening toothpastes react with the gears in the toothbrush head, and therefore should be avoided. Since the brush cleans so well, whitening toothpastes shouldn't really be necessary anyway but it would be much more helpful if the caution were included in the instruction booklet. I hope that they will update it soon if they haven't already.
