Oral-B Vitality Sonic
Advantages: Price, brush head is well-designed
Disadvantages: Hard to find replacement heads
I've had mixed experiences with electric toothbrushes. I've always found Ultrasonex brushes to be the best for recreating the 'dentist clean' feeling but they tend to be expensive and hard to come by. That said, I do feel that it's worth spending a little more on something as important as this. Oral B have been slashing the price of the Vitality Sonic brush for the past year and it's not too hard to find for £17.49 (roughly half of its RRP). It's nice to have an affordable electric toothbrush, safe in the knowledge that it's meant to be a lot more expensive.
The brush pack I bought only had one replacement brush head, which was a minus point. I like to have at least three brush heads as I tend to wear them out fairly quickly. Because of this, the trip to the supermarket to find replacement heads came a little sooner than I would have wanted. I found it really difficult to find spare heads, meaning that my precious Vitality Sonic sadly lay dormant for a few weeks, while I returned to the byzantine world of the manual toothbrush...
I eventually decided to go online to find replacement heads and found some for less than I would have paid in the shops. The brushing experience itself is very good- I prefer a traditional rectangular brush head to the circular design as it feels more thorough. Overall it has the right balance of power and gentleness. Sometimes when it had just been charged the Ultrasonex felt more like a powerdrill, whereas with the Oral B brush the power is more consistent regardless of how much charge it has left. The recommended charge time of 5 hours tends to give enough usage time for around a fortnight. I can't comment on the actual battery lifespan as I've only been using the brush for around 9 months but I've had no problems so far.
I like the 2-minute timer facility and I'm told that the unit is compatible with different heads that oscillate and rotate. All in all it gives a very good surface clean. I still use floss as I'm not sure if the Oral B is as effective on interdental spaces. Despite this, the brush is very good at what it does and represents an ideal compromise between the questionable budget models and the expensive professional standard brushes.
Summary: The Ford Focus of electric toothbrushes- reliable and simple
