Colgate ProClinical A1500
Advantages: Easy to use, leaves my teeth clean and plaque free
Disadvantages: None at all!
You're advised to charge the toothbrush up for sixteen hours prior to use, there was a little charge in mine when it arrived (luckily) but I noticed the power of the brush was much better after I had charged it. The charger works well; it comes with a shaver plug so there's no worries about having to charge your toothbrush in the bedroom or kitchen, or in fact dragging an electrical extension into a wet bathroom - you just take over your fellas shaver socket for a few hours and leave the brush to charge. It's beautifully easy to use, you simply drop the toothbrush into the small circle at the base of the charger and it'll start charging immediately - there's no wires to plug into the toothbrush or slots to fiddle with, it's great!
The brush is not only very simple to use, but also extremely good at cleaning my teeth. There are three settings to toggle between, 'Optimum' being the one I use every day as it provides a thorough yet gentle clean. This seems to be the default setting and I've got to say, it's perfect for me - I use 'Deep Clean' a couple of times a week but apart from the bristles going faster I can't really see much difference! Optimum cleaning is fine, leaving my teeth looking and feeling as clean as if I'd visited the hygienist! I adore the shine on my teeth after brushing and this is something which even impresses me now after over a months use; my teeth look brighter and feel amazingly smooth, these effects occur from the very first brushing with the A1500 and I can feel them each and every time I brush my teeth.
The key point when using this brush is not to press too hard on the surface of your teeth, and to let the brush do the work. I'm fastidious about my teeth so had to really work at not scrubbing as I would with a manual toothbrush, it helps that the brush cuts out when I press too hard as I'm trying to avoid doing this as much as possible as it makes it feel like the brush is about to break!
The feel as I brush is pleasant; I'm not keen on the vague tickling sensation produced for the first few seconds of every brushing session, but this wears off reasonably quickly and after that it's just a soft sweeping sensation with a bit of vibe action. It feels good actually and at times while I brushing I ponder Colgate's 'oral use only' statement which is printed in bold capitals on just about every single piece of literature I was sent relating to the brush... I love the glowing light which will only appear when I have the brush at the exact correct angle for thorough cleaning, it turns brushing my teeth into a bit of a game of skill! I find it tricky to get this angle but don't think it matters too much as I'm careful to cover all areas of my teeth and gums anyway, it would drive me seriously mad if I tried to keep the glow going for the entire brushing session!
The brush-heads are made up of three types and arrangement of bristles, each developed to be beneficial to a certain area of your mouth. There's a section of stiffer bristles which scrub the plaque and whatever else from your teeth, some bristles taper to a wavy point to thoroughly clean the gum-line, while the final ones get between your teeth to remove bits of food and to ensure all surfaces of the teeth are being cleaned. This works an absolute treat and I can feel a huge improvement in my overall mouth hygiene since I started using this brush, in fact when I brushed with a normal manual toothbrush at the weekend my teeth just didn't feel clean enough and I couldn't wait for my Colgate brush to charge! The brush-head is beautifully slimline by the way, it's much smaller than the head on a manual toothbrush and fits all areas of my mouth perfectly - this is most noticeable when brushing my back teeth and also the backs of my bottom row of front teeth, this one just fits better and stops me bruising my gums as I struggle to get the toothbrush into place!
The A1500 is wonderful to handle as the chunky cylinder shape fits so well in my hand, admittedly the on/off button has been knocked occasionally as it's located in a place which is inadvertently going to be gripped now and again - I can't honestly come up with a solution as I don't see where else they could have put it, and on the bright side I only catch it less than once a week whereas my previous electric toothbrush would routinely be accidentally switched off mid-brush by my clumsy morning fingers! It's a bit of a pain when you do turn it off though as the toothbrush works to a timer so you then have to start all over again - this doesn't really bother me as I like cleaning my teeth, but would be infuriating if I were in a mad crazy rush.
When I've finished brushing I simply rinse the brush-head in hot water and wipe the handle down, then the brush is ready to go for next time. It comes supplied with a smart toothbrush storage case which has sections for the brush and two brush-heads, this is ideal for me as our bathroom gets quite dusty at the moment thanks to ongoing work but I like the way the charger has built in 'pegs' to stand the brush-heads on as I think this would be a tidy way to store the toothbrush if I wanted it kept on show. Actually I'm glad for the storage case as I'm going away for the weekend next month and it makes general toothbrush transport easier and much more hygienic than a brush rattling round in the bottom of a toiletries bag.
I really, really love this toothbrush. Everything about it. Except for the price of the replacement brush-heads, which are around £18 for two. This overpriced annoyance aside however and I'm still going to give the A1500 a full five stars - it's fabulous and I'm so glad to have had the opportunity to try one out for free. With a price tag of just under £100 it's an expensive toothbrush I know, but having used it for a while now I can confidently say that I'd pay the full price if ever I needed to replace it - my teeth look and feel better than they have in years, and it's all down to Colgate and Bzz!
Summary: An excellent electric toothbrush which has given me a brilliant smile!
