Advantages: Deep clean, great smile, good oral health
Disadvantages: Noise, sore mouth
I was using an Oral B basic electric toothbrush until I saw in October Colgate were releasing the A1500 in conjunction with Omron making promises of health teeth and gums using technology adjusting speed for you as you brush. I was impressed and immediately got excited hoping I could afford to buy it and try it out. I was lucky to be getting £100 from my parents for completing my three year degree course so decided to treat myself to the top of the range A1500 at half price from the Colgate online store for £83.99 last November, I also recieved a free tube of Colgate toothpaste and got free delivery.
Colgate is a sub branch of the Colgate Palmolive group introducing the first toothpaste in a collapsible tube in 1896 moving from glass jars. Colgate now sells many manual and electric toothbrushes plus a range of sensitive, whitening and all round protective mouthwashes and toothpastes.
Omron are a Japanese electronics company founded in 1933 well known for medical equipment such as blood pressue monitors and thermometres.
When I recieved the package it was well wrapped in a cardboard box, when I opened this I saw the shiny red box which made me feel like a child at christmas. The box had the image of the toothbrush plus the images of teeth and gums and how it is fantastic for your mouth. I opened the box and took out the charging base and handle; I read the instructions which advised charging the unit for at least 16 hours before first use. The charging unit has a two pin plug so requires an adapter for normal mains charging, if you have a shaving socket in the bathroom that would be a bonus as it is inconvenient finding somewhere hygienic and clean to charge the brush. I like the base as its a halo so makes cleaning really easy, plus the base of the handle is solid with no rubber or lips so does not collect excess toothpaste or dirt. Just drop the handle into the charger and the light tells you its charging away. On the charging unit there are also two nodules which allow for safe upright storage of two brush heads.
I find this brush very simple to use with just two buttons on the front and a clear digital display. There are three settings you can manually switch between which provide three speeds of brushing to vary cleaning for different teeth. The setting I always use is the automatic mode which changes the speed at each 45 degree handle tilt so the front teeth are brushed at medium speed, tilting towards the gum is the most gentle and the molars are the fastest. There is an optimum setting on manual mode for a gentle hygienist clean feel and deep clean for a faster version of the optimum. After the first use you can see how the gaps between your teeth are much cleaner and your mouth in general feels much fresher. The heads provide an interdental clean and the sonic action helps to power away 5x more plaque and it has increased my confidence no end.
The toothbrush has a built in 30 second pacer to help the user spend an even amount of time brushing each set of teeth and an overall 2 minute timer for full brush time. I found initally I had to get used to the brush as it is very sensitive; it is important to let the brush do the work and if you press to hard the brush will slow down or cut out.
The brush comes with a nice sturdy travel case whcih is good to take away on holiday; I used this for a three night stay away and the brush was kept very safe and hygienic. There is also the one brush head included which I found disappointing, for the price I was expecting a spare for my partner. The brush head has three types of bristles - stiff bristles for plaque removal, lower bristle for soft cleaning of the gum line and some longer bristles for interdental cleaning. The head itself feels like a medium and is quite small which is ideal for me as I have a small jaw and have had to have teeth removed due to this issue of crowding. The head is very good at getting the hard to reach areas such as my wisdom teeth right at the back of my mouth and behind the front teeth which is often hard to do with a manual brush.
The 45 degree angle movement on the automatic setting is something I really like with the change in pace and blue screen glow being an indication that I changed angle. It is easy to dobut does require your head being straight up to happen properly. I also find the 30 second pacer useful as I split my mouth into four sections being the two sides and bottom and top. Sometimes I need longer than two minutes to brush my teeth overall but I think that is my own obsession rather than a toothbrush fault!
The design of the handle and the brush fitting are smooth making the whole unit easy to clean with no areas for the dried toothpaste to collect. The display and buttons are positioned where my thumb sits when brushing so I am conscious of turning the brush off when in use but so far this has not happened to me. To clean the unit I run take the head off after each use and run both the head and unit under water then dry with a towel. I then put the head and the base back on the charging unit until I use it again.
The only downsides have to be the noise the toothbrush makes which can be annoying for me but also my partner, I know its only two minutes but I often wonder what the neighbours think. Also I have found that it sometimes catches on my gums and can make them quite sore making further brushing difficult until I have fully healed.
I must say this is the best gadget I own, and the best toothbrush by far! My teeth are much cleaner and I have had to reduce my trips to the hygienist. I know the brush is expensive and the spare heads are priced at around £18 for two in most retailers but its an investment in health!
Summary: Ideal for pearly whites!
