Advantages: Encourages tooth brushing soft bristles easy for children to use
Disadvantages: Brushes are non replaceable so an expensive disposable option
Getting my young son to brush his teeth has at times proved problematic. One thing we have tried to do to make it fun has been to let him choose his own toothbrushes. He selected the Spiderman electric toothbrush a while ago.
As it is manufactured by Colgate I had hoped that using a trusted brand would mean that this brush was going to be of a good quality bristle wise.
It is fairly safe to say it was the look of this brush that appealed to my son. He had being doing about superheroes at the time at pre-school so the bright red yellow and blue design immediately caught his eye with Spiderman himself hanging upside down. We tried to encourage the use of this toothbrush with him by talking about him being a superhero cleaning his teeth like Spiderman which we found helped him get better at cleaning his teeth.
The toothbrush has a dual head designed which means it has a rotating top section and a fixed bottom section. The bristles themselves are nice and soft and in the time of using it haven't caused any bleeding to his teeth or gums. However my son does at times complain that it hurts his back teeth when I use it on him to finish off the job of cleaning his teeth. The combination of these two heads seems to mean that my son is able cleans his teeth more thoroughly than a standard toothbrush. The dual brushes cover a large area of teeth in his mouth in one go. What is surprising is despite the large head it is still fairly comfortable for my son to fit in his small mouth from the age of about 3 and a half.
The toothbrush is flat on the opposite side to the brush which is quite a handy feature as this allows the toothbrush to lie flat on the sink or the side of the bath for my son to put the toothpaste on himself which is something he now sees as part of his job of tooth brushing rather than mine.
The on off switches is located towards the top of the brush and is a simple depress on button for on and the other for off. These I think may had been a bit better located further down as at times the brush gets switched off by mistake if my son holds the toothbrush at a different angle. The handle itself is a nice slim design that fits nicely into my son's hands without any problems with him being able to grip the handle adequately.
The toothbrush comes supplied and fitted with 2 AAA energiser batteries inside. You can replace the batteries using a screwdriver to unseal the waterproof base of the toothbrush. However we have found that the batteries supplied have actually lasted the length of time the toothbrush has and there has been no need to replace these. The brush however is non-replaceable and this I think is the main disadvantage of this toothbrush as it means it is an expensive brush that last around 3-4 months in our experience. This makes it not a great choice from an ecological pint of view as well.
The toothbrush cost around £5 depending on the shop. I personally think this is a bit expensive for what is essentially a disposable item. However my son has loved using it so for that reason I am giving it 4 stars and would recommend it to other Spiderman fans between 3-6 years old to help them clean their teeth.
Summary: A brush my son loved using though not a cheap option to encourage teeth cleaning
