Oral-B Stages Disney Cars Power Electric Toothbrush
Advantages: timer for two minutes, fun for a child to use
Disadvantages: expensive replacement heads
== What is it? ==
The item is basically a standard oral-b electric toothbrush but as it is designed in the cars theme it really appeals to children as it looks fun. This of course will appeal to a parent as we all know how sometimes our children don't want to brush their teeth!
The toothbrush comes packed in one of those sealed tough plastic cases which seem to be virtually impossible to open! There are guidelines marked on the plastic on where to cut to open the pack but even using that it was a nightmare! After some cutting and finally some pulling of plastic I was able to get the pack open and remove the items.
In the pack you receive the toothbrush, the charging unit and the instructions. The toothbrush itself is red and blue on the base whilst the head features pictures of some of the cars characters as well as a small oral-b logo. I have to say it does look quite fun for a child but my son also felt grown up that he had an electric toothbrush rather than a standard one.
The charging unit has a shaver style plug and so you need to have an adapter plug to plug in to the mains when charging the product. These are picked up from many places such as large supermarkets for a small cost so this wasn't really an issue....besides, we stole one from my mum!
== Using the toothbrush ==
I have to say that initially my soon saw the toothbrush as a bit of a play thing and thought it was fun to switch it on and off but this soon passes and it is now only touched when he needs to brush his teeth.
We learned the hard way and quite quickly that it is probably best to switch the toothbrush on when it is in the mouth and ready to brush the teeth! The first time my son used it he applied his toothpaste to the head and switched it on before it was in his mouth and was promptly covered in splats of toothpaste as the head whizzed round!
I did think that my son would not be keen on the sensation of the toothbrush moving around in his mouth but he was fine. He giggled a lot at first saying that it was tickling him but of course now he is used to that sensation and it is jus the norm for him.
My son is six and although he likes to be quite independent I do like to quickly go over his teeth once he has had a go just to make sure they are done properly and it is usually advised that you do this until your child is around seven years of age.
What I think is an excellent feature of this toothbrush is that it has a two minute timer. Dentists advise that two minutes is the best amount of time to brush your teeth for on each occasion and so this is perfect. As the toothbrush buzzes whilst it works after one minute is stutters advising you to move on to the top set of teeth after brushing the bottom or vice versa and then again after another minute so that you know when to stop. My son really follows this and I have to say that it surprised me how long two minutes was really as I am pretty sure I didn't use to make him brush for that long previously!
We rinse the brush after every use using cold water and at the end of the day we pull off the head and give it a quick wipe down to make sure all is well for the next day. I think this is important as sometimes toothpaste can accumulate at the bottom of the head and it might cause issues with the functionality of the product. Removing the head is very simple indeed as it just pulls off and slots back on easily with no fuss.
== Care and maintenance ==
We charge the brush overnight once every four days or so. A full charge requires sixteen hours and should provide a week worth of brushing using it twice a day. We tend to put it on charge once my son goes to bed and then pull it off in the morning so I would say around twelve hours gives us a reasonable amount of charge.
The head features a colour strip so this will begin to fade within a three month period letting you know that it is time to replace the head. My son's toothbrush head is becoming splayed too as he sometimes has a tendency to bit on it so I will need to replace the head very soon. These can be purchased for £10.90 for a pack of two from amazon which isn't cheap but I am conscious that my son's teeth are getting quite a deep clean using this product.
I think it is important with a product such as this to routinely check for signs of damage or that it is in good working order but so far so good for us with this. We keep the charger in my son's room so it is away from water but of course you should always take care with electrical items and water should you keep the charger in the bathroom.
== Final thoughts ==
For the price that we paid for this toothbrush I have to say that it is a very good price. I would not like to pay £29.99 for it though as I do think that is a bit steep when you have replacement heads to buy as well. I do think they set should have come with at least one replacement head as standard though.
I am confident though that this is a high quality product which is helping to ensure that my son's teeth are well looked after. It is easy to use, well made and also fun for a child to own and use. If you can get it for a good price I would certainly recommend it.
I am not sure that I would have bought a product like this for my son before he was six as I just think an ordinary toothbrush would suffice then but I am pleased that we own it now. The product is not suitable for children younger than three anyway but I personally feel I would not buy it for another couple of years for my child so that he could use it properly and not be scared by the new sensations.
All in all though certainly a recommended product from my son and I
Thank you for reading my review!
