Sega Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit
by The Visual Memory Unit is the memory card for the Sega Dreamcast games machine, something that will not alter your life in any drastic way, but will provide a very useful peripheral accessory when games playing on this games console! Writing about a memory cards is not the most exciting hobby in the world, it’s not how I like to ... spend my free time, but hey, the VMU is more than just a memory card!!! The Visual Memory Unit, the official memory unit, comes complete with its own miniature LCD screen and some controller buttons too! I don’t think any other memory device for a games console can boast it’s own set of control buttons!! The VMU is a tiny little thing, but bigger than the PS2 memory card, bigger than the PS one memory card and bigger than the N64 ‘controller pack’, but it’s a lot more advanced, and looks very impressive! The point: there are many uses to this memory card, which include the following: The ability to play mini VMU Games, which become self-contained in the VMU! This means basically you can play games, simple graphics but irresistible with classic gameplay, that you have either downloaded from actual Dreamcast games that support this, or actual standalone games from the Internet, as the Dreamcast has a modem, you are able to visit websites and actually find real games to put on your VMU! Just simple games, but Snake, Pac Man, Puzzle games, a Sega GT racing game, and Tetris are just a few of the vast amount you can download. Beware, some are Japanese and may not make any sense to you!! Feature 2: during certain Dreamcast games, notably football games or sports games, you may wish to change your strategy, say from all out defence, to all out attack, but you don’t want your opponent knowing about this. Simple! If the game developers have included the feature, you will be able to change tactics during the game, using the VMU, whilst it’s still plugged in to your con troller. The VMU, thanks to its LCD screen, can also display other secret data, like in Quake 3, and other shooting games, it may tell you your health level, and score etc – how many bullets left… Downloading from Dreamcast games. Similar to downloading mini games, the VMU can also download characters from actual Dreamcast games so you can build them up, and modify them on the VMU, there won’t be many games that supports this, unfortunately! I think Sega GT and Quake 3 Arena and Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 do though. Interconnectivity is a superb word, and it’s also a battery-draining feature of the Sega VMU. This means is that you can trade files with other VMU without even using a Dreamcast. Remove the cap/lid as always, and slot them into each other (put those thoughts away), and get trading those files! But this does drain the batteries, which incidentally have a 3month lifespan, whether you use them or not. And the batteries do get expensive… Finally. What else is there that I can say about a memory card? Oh yeah! It can save Dreamcast game files. 1mb worth in fact! The end, Thanks KUMA!!! Read the complete review |

Dreamcast Keyboard
by Fruitycakey If you've got a dreamcast then you'll need a keyboard to make the most of it. You can surf the net and play games like Quake 3 using it instead of a normal dreamcast controller. It's the same as any other keyboard really apart from that it's got a dreamcast plug on the end and some of the keys are ... different. It's also very light so you don't need to be superman to have it on your lap. I'm not sure about the quality, it feels pretty good and the keys work without any problems but it feels a bit too light if you know what I mean. If you've got a dreamcast though this is an accessory that you really should get. I got mine for 9.99 recently so that's not very much for an accessory that makes owning a dreamcast much better. Surfing the net will never be the same when you get one of these. Read the complete review |

Sega Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit
by GodFather100 You know the Dr Pepper Adverts, claiming that the drink, Dr Pepper, part of the Coca Cola brand, was in fact NOT a Cola? Do you remember that? Well it probably is a cola because it just tastes like cherry cola to me anyway, but the point is - the Visual memory Unit is not just a memory card, it's actually a very funny little games ... system as well. I found this out courtesy of my little brother who endevoured to show me the fantastic Pac Man game on it - you have to download these games though as I warn you, they are not built in and will drain the very expensive batteries!! It is essentially a memory card. Just like the Sony PlayStation cards, this one will save your game and allow you to stop and save and pick up where you left off from - it's going to hold 1 megabyte worth of memory, enough for 10 games I would imagine. It fits into the Dreamcast controller - which is very comfortable indeed, you may like to read my op on it (hehe), and is generally a very good memory card for saving games. AH!! A SCREEN? Why on earth does a memory card have a screen? Well that's the idea if you want to play games on it - you have to see what you are doing, and because the controller has a slot in it, and a gap, you can see the screen when the VMU is plugged into your pad when you are playing a game. It's all very simple, but all very clever. Well done. Plus points: It costs just £19.99, or maybe even less if you can find it for less. I think its £10 from Sega. It's small and compact! It's light, easy to hold! You can play GAMES on it - just download them!! Plugs into your controller. Clever. Saves games!! DOWN SIDES: It's fiddly playing games sometimes. Ugly battery life. Grey in colour - dull!! Overall? A brilliant memory card, with no real major flaws, therefore I would say it should get the full 5 star treatment. Thanks for reading. Read the complete review |
