I recently got back into playing video games, and while you can play just fine using a keyboard and mouse, I was raised on the good old-fashioned control pad. After growing impatient with using the keyboard after a month or so I decided to start looking for a good quality control pad (i.e. no third-party imitations) and something that was at least as good as the N64 controller which was my favourite by far for comfort and design.
Searching through Amazon, it didn't take long to find the best one on offer - the "Microsoft Xbox 360 controller for Windows". The design is up to date, it looked comfortable to hold, and the price was great at £19.99. I did flirt with buying an original N64 controller and then an adapter to enable me to use it on my PC, however that worked out to about six pounds more altogether and I thought that the Xbox controller looked like a really smart product so I decided to go for the more up to date option.
The controller is packaged really well. You get a red box with a clear plastic section moulded over the product so you can see exactly what you're getting if buying it in a store. Open up the top of the box and you can pull out the moulded plastic piece inside that holds the controller, booklets, and an installation CD.
When I plugged the controller into my PC the driver installed straight away so it wasn't necessary to use the CD, and then it was ready to use straight away. I've been playing a lot of Fifa 13 and this made things so much easier. It feels robust and able to withstand being dropped and it's quite heavy most probably due to the vibration ability inside. I remember things like rumble packs first being on the market to make you 'feel the action'. I have to say I'm not a fan of this, and although it activates very rarely on Fifa 13, I would like to find the option to turn it off. Unfortunately the booklet is quite sparse. There are actually two thick booklets provided, but only because they contain a huge amount of different languages. The actual information you get is only a few pages, so if you want any further information you have to visit the website.
Using the controller, it's just the right size to easily reach all of the buttons, thumbsticks, d-pad and shoulder button controls. There is also an additional port on the underside, which I understand is used for devices such as headsets, and the cable is about 3 metres long which is generous. The controller is comfortable and certainly extended my amount of gaming time. After six hours of play I realised that the controller was still comfortable to hold. As a side note, I didn't intend to play for six hours and I don't recommend it. I woke up with one of my extra special migraines in the morning so I've been conscious not to make that a habit!
So overall, a great control pad that performs exactly as required and is comfortable for many hours of gaming.
I am a heavy gamer on the PC, it's one of my favourite hobbies and because of this I have accumulated a large amount of peripherals for my computer. Sometimes certain games are simply impossible to play with a keyboard and mouse, in my case it was "Rayman Origins" a platformer which keyboard controls are simply too imprecise for. So obviously I jumped to the conclusion that an Xbox controller would be the best choice because I also have an Xbox 360, but there are certain differences with the PC compatible version.
As someone who used a wireless controller on their Xbox 360 having a wire again feels quite weird, and can at times be annoying. It simply adds to the tangle of wires which have formed around my computer which is very irritating, the wire is obscenely long! Perhaps this is just a problem for me because certain people may game from a distance which means the wire could be beneficial for people like that. The buttons on the controller are perfectly normal and responsive, just like they are with the Xbox. A quick warning to anyone gaming on a Mac, you will have to download a separate third party program to allow it to work but I doubt many people will be hardcore gaming on their Macs.
Ultimately there isn't much to say about this piece of tech, after all it's a simple controller which is compatible with your PC. It does exactly what you want it to do and there aren't many third party controllers which could do it better!
bought this for my pc because i play halo and call of duty 4, at first i used a keyboard to play but you cant play an FPS shooter on a keyboard very well,This pad is easy to install pretty much a plug and play device and its really easy to configure all you have to do is change the controller settings in the game menu of the game you are playing.
This product is a must have for any pc gamer who plays shooting games, i think it would also work on other games to ive even heard of someone using it to play world of warcraft which does sound quite facinating.
Overall i would give this pad a 10/10 as its an exact copy of an xbox pad but for windows and it makes gaming alot easier on a computer than using a keyboard and mouse therefore i 100% reccomend you buy this item.
