My children both have Nintendo 3DS consoles. They are over a year old and thankfully still in very good condition, but their cheap 3DS games box had completely fallen apart, and they never did have the proper case for the console, but had cheap neoprene sleeves, and my youngest has a big stuffed Yoshi bag to put everything into, but this is a bit big and awkward. When I saw this offered for only £3.99 each it seemed like a good investment, and now that it has arrived, I am very well pleased with this little case.
This case comes in two designs. The blue and grey pictured above is unfortunately still £8.99, but the exact same case with a light grey and dark grey design is only £3.99. If you follow the Amazon link above, just click colour options to see the lower price. I do like the blue case better, with with two cases to buy this would have cost me an extra £10 and I bought this for function rather than form. That said, the grey one looks nice too and the boys were very well pleased with this small extra gift arriving a few days after Christmas.
This case is designed to fit the standard size 3DS. It will also fit the Nintendo DSI, and should fit the Nintendo 2DS as well. It can even manage with the old Nintendo DS lite , but I do not own any of the XL consoles so I can not say whther this will fit or not. I suspect it might, the size difference between the two models is not great and there is a tiny bit of wiggle room in this case, plus the padding has some give, but I won't make any promises. I have measured the inside of this case at 15 cm x 8.75 cm so if you console is smaller than this it should fit.
The bottom of this case is hard and covered in cloth. There is not any padding in the bottom section at all. The top however is textured rubber which looks as if it could absorb a great deal of shock, and has separate internal padding as well and slots for 3 games cartridges. There is also a lightly padded flap with spaces for an additional 3 games cartridges adding to the overall layers of protection. So this case has hard bottom with no padding and a soft top with tons of cushioning. There are some complaints on the lack of padding at the bottom, but I do think the fact that the bottom piece is hard and the DSI is securely held in place in by all the top padding, which should absorb some shock makes this more than adequate protection against minor mishaps like being accidentally dropped. It certainly provides more protection than the plain sleeves we had before.
This case will hold 6 games in total, one stylus and one console. I would have preferred to be able hold more games, as the boys do have a fair number of older DSI games in addition to the 3DS games, so this does not completely solve our games storage needs, but it is more than enough for days out, or even holidays. While my children do have older games that are used occasionally, they do only have a few that are used frequently and this gives them room to keep whatever they are into at the time. This means games don't get left out and lost or damaged. I do feel that having a good place for everything encourages children to be more tidy and this does make keep everything put away easy. I would have liked a layer of padding of on the bottom as well. But the boys both think this should get five stars and with a price of £3.99 I have to agree with them. My son has just come down and given me his old neoprene sleeve for the DSI I use. He said he doesn't need more as the new cases are "really awesome". That endorsement is good enough for me.
