Nintendo Wii Remote Jacket
Advantages: adds grip, makes remote fit my hand better
Disadvantages: not sure it's really needed for protection
When I bought my Wii I received this silicone cover with it. I probably wouldn't have bought it separately if it hadn't been a part of the package but I wouldn't be without it now.
What Is It
It is exactly what it says - a silicone cover that fits over the Wii remote to protect it from bumps and scratches. It's thicker around the very top then it is around the bottom, I assume this is because if you drop or throw the remote the top is most likely to land first and therefore the part that needs the most protection.
My cover is a clear rubber type material with grips down the sides of the remote meaning that it doesn't slip in my hand. I still always use the wrist strap for obvious reasons but my hand has never slipped when using this cover no matter how hot and sweaty my hands are.
There are well placed holes over the front of the cover and at the top on the back to allow easy access to the buttons. I have found that this cover doesn't get in the way of me using the remote at all. There's also a rubber part that fits into the hole for the nunchuck to protect this hole and stop dirt or anything else getting into the connection. However when the nunchuck is in use this folds neatly against the connection and doesn't get in the way of play at all.
This fits around the Wii remote very tightly and so it is rather hard to get on in the first place but then once it's on it can stay on and there is no need to remove it.
To put this on the remote slide the top of the remote into the top of the plastic cover through the larger of the two holes on the front of the cover. This is fairly easy to do and shouldn't present any problems. The tricky part comes next!
To fit it over the end you pull down the cover and slide it over the end, as I said this is a very tight fit and so does need a fair bit of force to get it completely over. When I did this I found that some of the sides had tucked themselves back inside the cover but it this happens it is easy to pull them out.
I've had mine on for almost a year now and besides changing batteries haven't had any need to remove the cover from the remote and so once it's on it can stay on; therefore you only need to go through this ordeal once!
I have found that the remote firs much better in my hand with this cover on them without it. That extra bit of chunkiness seems to make the world of difference. The grip provided by this is excellent and even after playing for hours and finding my hands getting very sweaty the remote has not slipped at all.
As for protection I can't really comment. Since I haven't dropped it or lost my grip I haven't had a chance to test how well it protects and I'm certainly not going to throw it across the room for this review! That said it is kept in a drawer with a lot of things in it and the cover hasn't scratched or marked at all.
To clean I simply wipe over with a damp cloth, being very careful that it is damp and not wet to avoid damaging the remote itself. I've found this is all it needs though as it doesn't really collect dirt or dust at all.
Price, Availability and Recommendation
Since this came with my Wii I'm not sure how much they cost in general but unofficial ones are available on Amazon for around £4 and Wii remotes are available with the cover for around £22.
I would recommend these if you can get them for a reasonable price. If I ever have a need to replace mine then I will be buying another because the cover allows the remote to fit much better in my hand and I like the added grip provided but other then this it doesn't really provide many extra benefits so despite the face that I love mine I'm giving it three out of five. I guess whether you want one or not really depends on what you're looking for it to do.
To add extra thickness or extra grip then I would highly recommend it, for extra protection I don't really see the point as you could just use the wrist strap.
Summary: A good product depending what you want it for
