Advantages: Small & cute, The through port on the RU
Disadvantages: Far too sensitive, Hugely frustrating to use
Another one of JOYTECH’s generally average accessories hits the shelves. This time it is a rather small and trendy sized remote controller that operates the DVD + CD functions on your PS2 or alternatively, if you’re a PS1 user, it can be used to control your music CDs or VCDs. (VCD plug-in component sold separately) This handy infra-red remote is about the size of a memory card and has all the button functions you could want especially when playing PS2 DVDs. These include navigation buttons, Menu and OSD* buttons and even a subtitle switching button. All these plus the usual buttons like Chapter Select, Play/Pause etc combine to create a very practical accessory. You may be wondering what the little remote ‘talks’ to in order to make the PS2 do what it is told. Simple! All infra-red signals need to be picked up via a Receiver Unit (RU), which is also found in the package. This small block plugs into either controller port 1 or 2 of the console and picks up all the signals from the remote. Just so you don’t have to keep unplugging the RU when you want to have a 2-player game, the RU allows for a game controller to be plugged into it, which is very convenient. Pressing the SWITCH button on the mini Remote Controller allows for you to switch between game controller and CD/DVD Remote Controller mode. Just like a Memory Card, the Remote Controller plugs into the Memory Card slot, which I assume may possibly charge up the Remote’s battery (included) when the console is on. The reason I don’t know about this is because the rather poor instructions included don’t tell you! Even though I have boasted quite a bit about this accessory, it has some major flaws as well. The buttons on the remote are extremely sensitive and so very infuriating when say you’re navigating DVD menus. Pressing the direction buttons can often send you going all sorts of places around the menus when you don’t want them to. I h
ave even noticed on regular occasions where pressing particular buttons on the remote may give out the incorrect command to the RU. e.g. Pressing the ‘Enter’ button has in times read the press as the ‘Stop’ command. Believe me that after a while, it can cause much frustration and you may well be tempted to return to using your game controller again. The only disadvantage to using this instead is that firstly it has a cable (which you don’t want especially sitting at far distances from your TV) and secondly you have to know what functions each of the 4 pretty symbols on the PS controller do. These are most likely the reasons you even thought of spending out on a Remote Controller. Overall, it is a smart looking kit with some nice touches, but I don’t recommend purchasing it at £14.99. If only the functionality of it was better, it could well have been worth the money. *OSD (On Screen Display)
