Advantages: Small remote, Receiver unit has passthrough port

Disadvantages: Sony one is miles better, Over-sensitive response

It's no great shock that the PS2 has already acquired an enormous amount of bizarre accessories. Some are superb, others are utter rubbish.
On paper though, a remote control for the PS2 could be regarded as one of the sensible essential purchases that you may make. After all, the PS2 has DVD capability so if you're going to watch films on it you may as well do it with style.

This little accessory from Joytech caught my eye quite some time ago for two reasons.
1: It's a compact unit.
2: It has a pass-through port.

When you open the small box you will find a fairly bulky receiver unit and a teeny weenie remote control (about the same size as a memory card). Also, you can actually store the remote in one of the memory card slots so that you don't lose it.
The remote's battery is already fitted (one of those slimline ones) and the receiver unit doesn't require one.

So plug in the unit in to one of the PS2's gamepad ports (doesn't matter which one) and then you can plug a pad in to the passthrough port on the receiver unit.
From experience I would recommend port 1 as you won't be able to use the remote at all times otherwise.

Other than that - you should have no problems here.

Build quality:
The remote is VERY small although that can be good depending on how you look at it. I've actually got a programmable all for one remote so I don't actually use the supplied one. It does work well though (if a little over-sensitive - thing here is though that the same goes for my all for one remote so the sensitivity is obviously related to the receiver unit too.

The receiver unit is (opposite to the remote) quite large. This of course is due to the passthrough port (which the official one from Sony does not have). It sticks out a good inch or two from the console and if you've got yours in full view it does nothing for the appearance - especially when you'
ve got a controller plugged in.

Performance:
As already mentioned it is a little sensitive (you may press a button once but it will perform the action two or three times).
It does work well on the whole though and I found that you don't have to point the remote directly at the receiver which is a good thing (as I like to slouch!).

Overall:
I actually got this free when I joined Special Reserve so in effect it cost me £6.99 which is around half the going rrp.
If I'm honest I'd have to say that I'm glad I didn't pay £12.99 for it although there are some good points to it.
My advice would have to be go for the official Sony one. It's more expensive but the overall package is better.
Unless you've got two controllers plugged in at all times of course in which case you'll love the passthrough port.
