Advantages: Bluetooth means long battery life.

Disadvantages: Looks like every other remote, not really a bad thing though.

How much better is life with a dedicated Blu-Ray remote? I hated the functionality of the standard control pad for DVDs. I searched for ages until I managed to get one in my local Game store. It was just under £18, wwhich is about the normal price, give or take a pound.
The remote is very normal looking in black and I quite often get it mixed up with my Samsung TV remote. The button configuration makes use much easier and even gives you extra funtions that you neded to access via multiple button presses on the controller.
When I was searching for this I was warned that Sony are making a newer version with extra buttons. This is designed to support the PS3 PlayTV add-on, so I wasn't worried about spending my cash on this.
I've heard that the battery life is great and also as it uses Bluetooth it does not need a direct sight of the console, making life much easier.
In contrast to other reviews, I think Sony are great allowing you to play DVDs and BluRays out of the box. The original XBox needed the dedicated remote to even play DVDs.

Summary: You need this if you are using your PS3 for DVDs and Blu-Rays
