I have a Wii fit and an Xbox. I bought a silicone skin for the Wii remote and finding it much easier to use, I decided to look for a 'skin' for my Xbox controller. I searched online and found an array of different colours to choose from. The Xbox gets a lot of use from my partner and the controller was starting to look a bit grubby. I thought that a skin would protect it and also make it easier to handle.
==Price and availability==
I paid £1.99 for the silicone cover from Vortex and I bought it from eBay. They had see through, black, blue and red as colour options but I believe there are others to choose from.
The silicone skin cover fits very snugly over the controller and can take some manoeuvring to get it in place. It is specially designed for the Xbox so that all the holes are in right place for the buttons. It is quite thin which is good as it does not add too much bulk to the controller. It does not rip but stretches over the plastic controller and then springs snugly into place. It doesn't fit baggy or lose and once on, there is not much reason to take it off again so it just sits there looking pretty.
I was so impressed with the Vortex skin that I bought another one for the spare controller! I like the way the skin fits so neatly around the controller and how comfortable it is in your hand. After a while of playing your hands do start to get sweaty and this skin helps you feel more in control as you have much better grip.
I like the way the controller looks while wearing the skin! It looks far more jazzy with its colourful skin on and you get a chance to really personalise your controller. This is even better if you have more than one as you can tell them apart much easier.
It also protects the controller, mine was starting to look a bit dirty whereas now when I take the skin off, it looks in the same condition as when I covered it up. The only downside to the silicone skin is that fluff attracts to it. I'm not sure if it's static that causes it to stick or just the way the silicone fibres are knitted together but fluff from the carpet sticks to it. This is quite to brush off and it seems to be a bit of a dust magnet! To wash it, I took it off and rinsed in the sink before letting it dry and putting it back on.
Overall the skin is great quality and they are priced really reasonable. I would recommend it to anyone that has an Xbox
Recently, and much to my husbands annoyance, I got into the X Box, mostly Call of Duty, and we now tend to spend a fair bit of our child free time playing the new MW3 game. He has received a fair bit of stick from his mates, as I am hardly a natural gamer, and I am still rather girly when playing!
A few weeks ago I decided I wanted to buy a headset, but didnt want to pay a lot in case I decide to give up in a few weeks, and while browsing for one on Ebay, I also came across a lot of these silicone skins for the controllers, and could not resist when I found a pink one! I paid the whole of £2 for it and couldnt wait for it to arrive.
It turned up a few days later and I put it on my controller straight away. The picture of it showed it to be rather a pale baby pink colour, but in actual fact it was a few shades brighter, to my pleasure!
We have bought some silicone skins for other items before and always found them a struggle to fit, and in a few cases this has resulted in the silicone splitting, but this is cut so that it slides around each of the 'handles' and doesnt cover the whole controller. There are cut outs to go around all the control buttons, including the back buttons. There is a sufficient gap to stop the silicone catching any of the buttons on the top of the controller, although I have found that I have to pull it down a bit on one of the back trigger buttons as it catches and the button does not hold down properly, but once I pulled it out a bit, it stopped the problem.
I also find that having the silicone gives me a much better grip of the controller which has helped my game play, so I found that an added bonus.
I love my skin, although my husband hates how I have girlified his spare controller, and it didnt help when I took a photo of it and showed all his friends, but it gave me a giggle! To be fair, he is now considering buying himself one for his controller, but I think he will go for a different colour! Looking around we found they came in just about every colour of the rainbow!
For only a few pounds, my controller has a fresh new look and also helps me handle it better!
=== The product ===
This is a silicone cover designed to fit an Xbox 360 controller nice and snugly allowing for increased grip and better game play, also, it means that you can personalise different controllers and we have one black one and one pink one meaning we can differentiate between the different controllers straight away which is ideal as we have two Xbox 360s in our home and different controllers are synced to different consoles.
=== How does this work? ===
Well what you do is place this over your Xbox 360 controller, it will sit very snug to it like a skin. It's designed to fit nice and close meaning you can get a fantastic grip on the controller, it won't slip around and it will keep your hands feeling nice and comfortable even after hours of game play. This will stop your controlling from slipping out of your hands if they become sweaty which seemed to be something that was happening to my husband a lot when playing his first person shooter games, hence the reason for the first purchase. The second one was so I wouldn't feel left out (he bought it for me) and so I could have a nice pink personalised controller!
=== Where can I buy this & for how much? ===
This is not as widely available as it was when I purchased ours in 2009, however, there are several sellers on Amazon & eBay who are selling this for just £1 + postage which is very reasonable, also, there are lots of similar versions available on the market for a bargain price.
=== Overall opinion ===
This silicone cover is brilliant, it fits snugly and works very well. It is a little fiddly to initially fit this but I find that it really is like a 'skin' on the controller; it never moves and it is airtight against the controller meaning no bubbles or potential for it to become damaged.
Since having these I have found the Xbox 360 controller to be a lot more comfortable, it does not slip out of my hands and it does not become sweaty and sticky after hours of use. The only downside is that the silicone covers do seem to attract cat hair, however, this is easily rectified with a well wrung cloth and a quick wipe. Over time we have found that some dirt & dust will collect underneath this but it is months before this builds up enough to make even a small layer of dirt and this, again, is easily rectified with a wrung out cloth or even some cotton buds if you don't want to remove the cover.
This cover is strong, it's very flexible and when playing on my Xbox 360 I frequently twist and fiddle with this and so far, after almost two years, it has not torn or become damaged in any way. This has not worn in any places and overall I have been very pleased with my silicone cover, particularly for the low price.
