Advantages: Online Gaming is the advantage, along with paying for a service gives you a more reliable service.
Disadvantages: It puts you in touch with some horrible people, sometimes.
Theres no Live without Subscription, and thats where the Xbox Live Gold Subscription comes in.
Retailing at around £40, (£30 if you look on Google) you dont get much for your money, really.
Access to demos for free, and access to films and downloads (DLC) for a further fee, means that your £40/£30 is paying for the up-keep of Xbox Live, like Servers, the people maintaining these servers, and a few quid for MS to profit. But that isnt a BAD thing. This means that there isnt much time when the servers are down, and when they do go down, they are usually back up again after a short amount of time.
Many people compare the PSN to Xbox Live, but there really isnt a comparison.
Of regular gamers, there are 'officially' 11m Xbox Live Subscribers (who regularly play) and 11m PSN Players (who arent regular players.)
The difference is that Microsoft are including people who have paid for Gold, whereas Sony are clamining all the people who have signed up with multiple accounts are 'online.' This shouldnt be counted, as it could be that someone has been giving racist or threatening abuse over the PSN, and have signed up to the PSN again with a new name to keep that clean.
But, as it pertains to an Online Experience, XBL is the way to go. There are still racists and so on, threatening and all that, but the experience is second to none.
The subscription allows you to have this, and to send messages to buddies, download demos and view films that are available, as well as TV Shows (this is a regional variation based on Country to Country.) and without it, you cant go online... but given there are so many people paying for it, and not kicking up a fuss, the facts speak for themselves, dont they!
I will continue to buy this for the amount of time I am online (so far I have had two) because Online Gaming right now is such a hot commodity.
Summary: If you have an Xbox, and your online, then you havent got a choice - this is a MUST.
