This is a review on the official controller for the XBOX console. I know some of you may think ‘what the hell am I doing?’, well I thought I would give something a bit different for a try, so hopefully this review will be useful to you, and please bare with me.
Information
**********
When I saw this controller (when I got my XBOX console), I thought that it looked a lot like the Dreamcast controller (which I previously owned), and has similar buttons to it, so maybe Microsoft based it on that. The XBOX controller allows you to play the games for the console, and will bring you fun. You may think at start that this controller looks rather big, and may take some time getting use to, well that is true, but size does not matter, as long as you can access the buttons quick and easy (not recommended for small hands).
As on the XBOX console you have the choice to have four controllers at one (four slots on the console), so you will probably end up getting more then one of these. There are two versions of the official XBOX controller, the black version (the basic one that is all in black and the first that was released) and the Crystal version (the one that I own, which is also limited edition). The crystal version is see-through so you can see all the insides of the controller and actually looks better then the black version also, but is probably dearer.
The controller is very durable, I have had my controllers for nearly two years, and not even start to break or show any sign of not working, which is very good, also lasts long, and quite rock solid, but don’t start throwing it around, as then you will break it. The controller has one extra feature, like it has two slots on top of the controller for memory cards or expansion packs, or whatever they are deciding to do with it.
Buttons & Rumble Feature
**********************
The XBOX controller has many buttons. It has two analogue sticks, which will give you access to move your character around, and view the surrounding area, you have four main buttons, which is A, X, Y and Z (you will be using them buttons a lot), you also have the D-Pad, which is the classic controller pad, and you have the white button, and black button, also a start button, and back button. You also get two back buttons, the left back button and the right, these are normally used for shooting games, like Halo, and XIII to fire your gun or use second function.
All of those buttons are uniquely special for each game; accept the start button, which is always for pausing the game. The buttons are not too far separated, so they are easy accessible, even though as the controller is big, you may think it will be uncomfortable, but the smoothness of the controller makes you feel comforted and ready to play for hours on end. When you push the buttons on your XBOX controller, it works straight away, it responses very fast like most Controllers do, with no problems or buttons getting stuck. Very responsive.
The XBOX controllers do have rumble features on them if up to now you have been wandering. The games you play will have an option for you to turn the rumble feature on or off, if you have a problem with rumble or if the controller does not like to rumble. If you have Crystal XBOX controllers, then you will be able to see the rumble mechanisms at the ends of the controller, which you will see spin when playing a game where the rumble is needed.
Design & Packaging
*****************
The design of the controller allows anyone to use this controller, unless you have small hands, then you have no chance. The official XBOX controller is very similar to Sega creations, and it is possible that Sega have had their part in the design with Microsoft. There is a new XBOX controller out, but it is no way near as good as the official original controller, and it is much dearer, so not really worth bothering.
When you buy and XBOX controller from your local game store or an internet store, it will come in a biggish box, with giving you detail about the controller and how to use it, for those whom are dumb, I recommend you read the instructions on how to discover the full potential of your official XBOX controller. The controllers lead, as it is detachable, will be folded in a bag while on the controller, but you can detach it from the end of the lead with the socket that allows you to plug your controller into your XBOX console. If you have any problems with your XBOX controller, you will have phone numbers on the instruction manual that you obtain inside of the XBOX box, but I am sure you will have no problem.
My Point Of View & Product Value
*****************************
I first got my XBOX console on my 14th birthday, and had two controllers come with it, as I have a Crystal XBOX (limited edition) I would have two Crystal controllers. It was a while later before I ended up getting myself two more XBOX controllers, mainly so I could play four players Halo, which is a lot of fun.
I managed to buy my XBOX controllers for £14.99 each, but now they have bumped the price up to £24.99 from the shop I got them from, but they are £17.99 at play.com if you do decide to get more controllers, there is a good reason to get more controllers, if you have a group of friends round, and money, and XBOX console, also a decent four player game, then it is wise to have a set of four controllers on you.
If searching for Crystal controllers, as you may have a Crystal XBOX, then you will probably not have much luck, as they are probably either Sold out, or temporarily out of stock, like Game and Play.com are, but there are plenty of other places to get an XBOX controller.
The things I like about the official XBOX controller is mainly the look, not too keen on how big it is, but the buttons are in good places, it has a big sign in the middle of the XBOX controller saying XBOX, just encase you forget which console the controller belongs to. Also the colours of the buttons, that are very similar to the controllers Sega made, brings some spark into it. I shall give the official XBOX controller 4 star * * * *, as they could have been better, like been smaller, and more colours, but I would not be able to play my XBOX without them, so they are needed. I recommend this controller to everyone that has an XBOX console and needs a controller or needs more.
