Advantages: Same price as everyone else and some good hidden deals
Disadvantages: Trying to sell you warranty and the refussal of haggling
I've always regarded high street electronics shops as a great place to haggle on a price to get a bargain and usually get it cheaper than if you got it online.
So the opening statement was a bit of a but... sentence so here goes. I came to this conclusion based upon some haggling experience and where some people will just take the price offered I will haggle for anything from DVDs to Laptops and even a pint of beer, it all adds up.
Anyway so Comet, what can I say a rubbish company which I shall not be doing business again. First off I went in there to buy my Sony Vaio laptop which they had in stock. I asked for some money off with no luck so I was 'umming' and 'arring' about whether to get the one I wanted or get something cheaper and so was going to leave and research and suddenly just went for it and bought this laptop. I asked about the price and the salesman said he couldn't lower the price any more or throw anything in for free (boo hiss!) but he did check the computer to see if there were any unpublished deals, lucky for me there was, I got a really nice laptop bag costing £40 RRP for £20 which saved me going out and buying a naff one.
So I got that but it was hard work. Now for the real reason I hate, yes hate (very strong word but needed at a moment like this) Comet. I was ready to pay this guy when he offered me a bloody rip-off warranty deal from Comet. He kept going on and on about what if and trying to slag the laptop off saying what if the screen went after the manufactures warranty etc... He went on for a full 10 minutes with me pretty much saying no (not directly) to the point I said no and threatened to walk out. I didn't do this though because I had come all of this way and spent the petrol so I wasn't going home empty handed.
So there you go Comet's sign that says "We don't pay commission" what a load of old horse what-its. If they don't get paid commission they must have some obligation to sell warranty or they'll lose their job or something because he was really trying to sell me this product.
Anyway after I bought this laptop back in March 2008 it still works fine with no problems and hence I saved myself £120 odd.
Want my advice buy from local shops who can offer you some money off and who will not try to hard sell you warranties you don't want or need.
Summary: Just stear clear

- 02/08/09 I always pre-empt the warranty discussion by beating them to it and saying (slowly and clearly) "I-don't-want-an-ext ended-warranty". Repeat as necessary, until they've got it... |

- 02/08/09 I must admit they have tried to sell me warranties but a firm no is enough! |

- 02/08/09 I use Comet in Aylesbury and have never been offered a warranty. Maybe I just have a grumpy old bag face!! I can't stand it when they push the warranty and like you it would make me shop elsewhere if it happened x |
