Advantages: Big stores, big range of electronics goods
Disadvantages: You can't really test out the equipment, sales people don't seem to know a lot
Comet stock a huge range of electrical goods from televisions, to hi fi, to computers. Therefore I went there with 2 intentions in mind, the first one was to look for a new hi fi and the second was to search for a new television.
When you enter a typical comet, you entered into a vast store with a very nice clear layout and most importantly plenty of staff on hand to help answer any questions you might have and to entice you into a purchase.
Since I already know quite a bit about televisions, I wanted to reinforce this knowledge and ask some more general questions out of interest. Unfortunately the sales guy I met with didn't seem to understand the concept of backlight bleeding and when he consulted with his fellow colleague, he insisted that this was not an issue. This was somewhat eyebrow raising because as he uttered those words, I could clearly see the very backlight bleeding on the television being displayed.
When I pointed out this out, the other sales person went on to the defensive and insisted that this was just a consequence of the backlight being turned up to attract attention. I found this something of a bemusing answer because patches appearing on the screen is a fault. The retort of simply turning down the light, only attempts to hide what is there.
I was a little disappointed by this, but then still undecided about televisions, I looked at the hi fi. Unfortunately it is difficult to genuinely test out the hi fi's because you have to be courteous to other customers and therefore can't listen to the system with any significant volume. The second thing is you can't relax just standing there for a few minutes.
In the end I decided that this was not the store for me and I would need to seek out more knowledgable sales people for the television and as for the hi fi, the only way of truly getting a listen would be to go to a hi fi dealer.
Somewhat disappointed
Summary: Could be a lot better

- 15/10/09 Indeed but as I am reviewing my experience of Comet, then it's valid |

- 15/10/09 I think that most mainstream retailers would suffer in this way. The staff members just aren't trained or interested enough to be experts in what they're selling. |
