Advantages: They will register anyone and their minimum typing requirement is very low

Disadvantages: You will probably be patronised and talked down to

When I graduated, eight years ago, I had no office-work experience whatsoever. Still, I registered with Adecco to try to get something at the bottom rung of the ladder. They made me go through the usual tests such as audio typing and letter construction and was advised that because my typing speed was above 35wpm (their shockingly low minimum requirement!) that they should be able to find me something.

They were reasonably pro-active and I was sent to two or three interviews and was offered a post with a salary of £10,000. Coincidentally, I was also offered another job the same day (one which I had found and applied for myself, not through Adecco) with a salary several thousand pounds higher. I called Adecco to advise them that I wouldn't be taking the job as the salary was too low. This was when the staff member showed her true colours. I was told to get off of my high horse, and that just because I was a graduate did not mean that I was too good for the job and that I wouldn't stand a hope in hell of being offered a job that paid any more than £10,000. I took great relish in telling her that I had been offered just that and that Adecco could remove my details from their database.

This little outburst demonstrated to me quite well that Adecco clearly think of job-hunters as hopeless scum. I suppose it is worthwhile remembering that it is the companies with vacancies that pay Adecco and not the job-hunters, so Adecco are only interested in filling the vacant positions rather than finding you a job. Do bear this in mind when you register with them.

That incident destroyed the little faith I had in employment agencies and I have never used one since.

Summary: Use your own initiative and find a job online or in a newspaper.
