Advantages: You mean there are some ?
Disadvantages: Poor pay, crap contracts, crap condtions, crap crap crap all the way
My experience with Manpower, certainly doesn't mirror the last posting, I find it hard to believe that US companies (reknown for being the WORST in the world to work for regarding benefits and other material employment matters) like Manpower are any different from most, if not all other agencies. I'll give two example scenario's and you the jury make your mind up.
A colleague and I went to Birmingham 2nd week of October 2006 on a job hunt and decided to 'hit' all the agencies we could, so, smartly dressed and with a bundle of CV's in tow each we descended on the epicentre of the West Midlands - and wished we'd never bothered.
Several agencies were shut (we'd caught the dinner hour) rather than leave some schoolkid manning reception which is the usual form, they were shut, we happened upon Manpower in New Street, Birmingham, couldn't see any jobs in the windows to entice is inside, so we thought hmm, perhaps this lot don't go with the pack where 'ghost jobs' are concerned. So, in we went. We found two 'recruitmenty consultants' one sitting on a main desk as you go in the door and one to the right of the first (looking out) my colleague was called over by the far one and I was enticed by the dragon at the desk, who rudely snatched my CV up and thumbed through it after I explained we were looking for work. It took her all of about 20 seconds to do this after which time the CV was thrust back in my hand and I was told 'we can't help you - try elsewhere further up the street' .. hmm, can't or WON'T help, can't or WON't be bothered, you choose. I was gobsmacked and dumbfounded at this shoddy example of what can only be described as the foulest of employment agencies, absolutely horrific treatment of a job seeker if you can imagine. I'd expect this level of service from some spotty scroat in Burger King picking his nose as he asks you whether you want mayo on the burger (hold the gherkins son - hold the gherkins) - not what you'd expect from a so called 'professional recruiment agency/business'.
I left shaking my head and my colleague who was bi-lingual in English and Italian left, about as dejected and infuriated as I did. Terrible. But the Manpower saga didn't end there. To cut a very long story short, they hold a contract with a company called CapGemini in Birmingham (Aston to be precise) which is a multi-faceted contract for IT helpdesks for various civil service agencies. After seeing the job advertised in the Evening paper, I decided to apply, well, after waiting 1/2 an hour in a reception area and watching the poor souls come off shift, i realized that this definitely wasn't a 'cream contract' not for a measly 6 quid an hour ... paupers pay. The interview was apalling, no information offered whether it was temp to perm or what, no details on benefits promotions or any other information. In all honesty I thought 'why did I ever bother', the dry irony is that in October 2006 I was told they couldn't help, now they could ... signs of desperation to fill another shitty contract I wonder.
You the jury decide - Manpower - Angels or Devils
'MANPOWER THE WAY WORK CAN BE' says the tag-line, oh really? You could have fooled me (well you nearly did but I saw through the bullshit ...)
Summary: 0/10 and I won't be darkening their door ever again - that's a fact

- 09/02/07 Glad to see that people share my view, I've just had a look at the UK website, very slick and sleek, almost alluding to professionalism. Agencies are getting worse and worse, the problem with the UK worth ethic is that employers (not all..) don't trust taking people on, they don't want the HR hassle and headaches, far easier to kick someone off a contract for poor performance (i.e. otherwise 'you're sacked!') than to sack the party and risk a tribunal, bad press, legal bills as more and more people won't take lying down or standing up some of the tactics employers use, just look at the arch nemesis of the unions ASDA, I worked for this shower for 3 months ... the most horrific back breaking job i've ever done and i'm a hard working chap, this was the pits and ASDA had tons of immigrant agency workers from Poland and Czechoslovakia working for them, why? Because they'll get out of bed for a fiver an hour AND don't ask too many questions about human rights and worker rights. Manpower should team up with ASDA - cowboys together :) |

- 08/02/07 Manpower must have gone downhill, I did some work for the Birmingham branch a few years ago and one of the places they sent me I was actually on a better hourly rate than their permanent staff! |
