Hi, is anyone ever heard about Connect recruitment agency in London? They ask me to pay 145£ for dental receptionist course and 145£ for first aider course to get the job i have applied for. Is that normal? Thank you
Stay away fromQuest Employment Ltd Northampton, Had one of the worst experiences with this agency.Avoid them at all cost.With our initial conversation they promised 5 days a week,8 hour work, which seemed reasonable.I had two more offers in hand at that moment one with a restaurant and other with a departmental store (I am a single mom desperately looking for work), but since this offer seemed reasonable I decided to join them (and this proved to be the worst decision I made in recent days). I started to work with them, firstly they charge insane travel cost everyday, then within a couple of weeks the work volume reduced to just one or two days in a week. I have to start my job search again and hope I find something soon.They are really pathetic. I hope their all contracts with the companies are made null and void and they are out of business very soon.

Diana Graham gave out my contact information to her client. (By that time I never had a chance to talk to Diana in person or have an interview with her.)
Then the client called me (I was on a loud street) and of course my interview didn't go well. The client misunderstood my needs. (Diana didn't provide me any information of the client, I didn't know phone number or name, or when I should expect calls...or anything)
Same day Diana told me she want to see me so better if I go strait form the airport to her office.
I ran from the airport without any break or lunch and in the office Diana was very unrespectful.
She is trying to blame me for the whole situation.
Also, I lost my chances... is not easy to get hired. And of course Diana will not going to be helpful after this. I hope she will take 5 minutes and really think about "respect to others" because one day she will have nobody around.
When you have:
* been lied to,
* treated with disrespect,
* sent to employers who send you right back home with no work,
* not received your salary or relevant salary slips,
* have been ignored,
* have been sent to jobs you specifically said you were not interested in,
* have been told not to ask questions,
* have been told you should do the job the agency wants you to,
* when you have had the phone put down on you because you asked how long the job would last, because all jobs are ongoing but never last longer than 4-5 days,
* noticed that nobody reads your CV,
* been bullied by the team leader of the employer
* been told not to talk to other co-workers by the employer
This didn't happen to me, it happened to my partner who is from an EU country who speaks fluent English with a decent CV and solid employment history before coming to live in the UK!
I have 8 years multilingual recruitment experience outside the UK and I am disgusted and ashamed of the treatment so many have to endure whilst trying to find permanent employment in the UK.
FYI - I do not work in recruitment in the UK (tried it but I care too much about helping people find a job!) I now work in Customer Service and get to help people!

I don't hold recruitment agencies in high regard but the initial conversation I had with a salesman at Technical Resources (Weybridge) has to go down as the lowest point in my relationship with recruitment agencies.
TR: HELLO! (That was it! How professional. If I answered a phone like that in my sphere of work I would get a verbal warning)
Me: I'm just returning a voice mail that was left for me. (these cowboys initially called me)
TR: WHO WAS IT!
Me: Not entirely sure as the VM was scrambled due to a bad line.
TR: WHAT SKILLS DO YOU HAVE?!
Me: (Outlined my skill set)
TR: I know the position you're talking about. Do you have so and so skills?
Me: No, I have 'these skills' as outlined on my CV you must have seen.
TR: No, we don't have any lower level jobs at the moment. (cheeky little no mark)
Me: Sorry, but what is your name?
TR: Matthew. Ok? We'll be in contact, Bye. (put the phone down on me)
Me to myself: Ok then bye. (Matthew you're a numpty!)
Needless to say I won't be in contact with these cowboy salesmen again. The management at TR need to get their staff under control or abandon their targets culture as it's making your staff look like arrogant buffoons.

They are very unprofessional, yet they make out that they are above the rest.I have registered with many other agencies in central London, and Burton Bolton and Rose are appalling in comparison.Their telephone manners are sloppy, the receptionist was very poorly dressed, and the agent you meet doesn't make you feel like they are looking out for you, but rather just haling you round their office for the registration like cattle.
I would not advise anybody to register with Tate Recruitment in Cambridge. They are only contractually obliged to find three months of work for each temp, each year, and most of the time, they don't even find that. Even if you respond to an advertisement on their website or window and call them, they tell you they will contact you when something comes in, and you get nothing. These things are par for the course for Employment Agencies.
However, recently, I had an ongoing contract, via Tate, with a very good company. Initially, I worked four days a week, and the company were so happy with my work, that they increased my hours to full time, and shortly afterwards interviewed me for a permanent full time job.
It was year end, and Tate had requested more money from the company, for providing temp services. This increase in their fees resulted in the company cancelling the entire contract with Tate.
The day this happened, Tate rang me and told me that I had lost the contract, because I was "too chatty". At the time, I did not know that Tate's actions had caused the cancellation, so they left me no choice but to accept the blame. I was left stunned, disappointed and confused. Tate told me a barefaced lie.
I found out much later what Tate had done, from the company in which I had been temping. Not only did Tate cost me the contract without any notice whatsoever, they cost me a permanent job. Having left me high and dry, and lied through their teeth, Tate have not found me a single days work since, despite having chased them and applied for contracts via their website and their office.
This is one temp that Tate have lost.
They don't even call you with a job that they have on their site and say keep looking if you see anything call us. Is it not your job to get my CV out to your clients and find me work? They are like car sales execs and only chase the pound notes where the min amount of effort is required. It's a joke. I have emailed and phoned in and you get the usual 'she is in a meeting' It is all so cowardly. The main recruiter in Cambridge is ex Kellys in Cambridge so beware. Useless. Believe me totally useless. Manpower is backed up by a big corporate group and website but at local level in Cambridge they are as good as dog dung. I have heard that several agencies in Cambs are poor and simply couldn't care a less. No longer live there and now earn £35k a year plus a car - happy days!! Have done for 3 years.
Most people are under the misapprehension that recruitment agencies are there to find people work. I used to be that naive also and it took a while to realise the truth. The simple fact is that recruitment agencies are there to make money. New technology means that they can now do this far more easily and quickly than ever before.
Consider the typical recruitment process:
1. An employer contacts an agency and says they have a vacancy.
2. The agency gets the employer to write a job spec (doing the work of the agency).
3. The agency feeds that job spec into their CV analysing software.
4. The agency places the job spec on various job sites and waits.
5. Applicants send in their CVs (must be in MS Word format) which the agency feeds into their analysing software.
6. The software gives a score to the CVs and the agency picks the top three or four and sends them off to employer.
7. The employer then picks a short list and the agency calls them up and arranges an interview.#
8. The employer gives the job to one of the applicants and the agency pockets 10-20% commission, probably for less than hours total work.
The most work the average agency seems to do is when they are trying to find prospective clients. One way to do this is get some office junior to look at all the CVs posted on job sites and ring up the applicants. They will then say something like
"I have seen your CV on XYZ and think we may have the ideal position for you. However, I just need to get a few details from you first"
The conversation will continue for a bit and then they will say something like:
"just so we don't duplicate any work, have you applied for any jobs recently, if so what position and with what company?"
You will tell them all about the jobs you have recently applied for and they will then go and contact those companies and try to get work from them. They will also try and attract applicants for this purpose by using fake vacancies, it is estimated that about 30% of jobs posted on jobsites are fake. Sometimes they will not even bother phoning you up but instead will just send you an email asking you to update your details. Including any jobs you have applied for recently.
A good agency will visit the employer and find out all about them and then interview the applicant to make sure they are a good match. But they are very few and far between, why go to all that bother when there are easier ways of doing it?
No one actually READS CVs any more so you have to write them to get a good score on the analysing software. If you use the same CV for lots of different vacancies the chances are you will get nowhere. You have to customise your CV for each application. For example if the job spec says they need "an experienced commercial vehicle mechanic" but your CV says "twenty years experience in servicing vans and trucks" it will probably get discarded by the software as it is looking for key phrases.

I signed up with Spring about four years ago and I must say they were pretty efficient. Their offices in Chiswick were a pain to find but were professional. The staff are very friendly, know what they are doing and very supportive. The lady that was my recruitment manager was very efficient. She was in constant contact with me at all times, kept me abreast of what was happening. The tests that you're required to do where all a breeze and she was very helpful in every query I made. I got a job like three days after I signed up, which was impressive. Unfortunately, the boss I was assigned to was an absolute nightmare! I only worked there for like a month and had to get these guys to get me a new job. I got a new job and again the same thing happened.. another nightmare. But the third time I got lucky that they hooked me up with a pleasant boss and the company too is wonderful to work for. I still got my job till now despite 1,000 of my colleagues losing theirs to retrenchments. In the three years I've worked under Spring, they've never missed a payment (I get paid every Fridays). If there's a problem they call me in good time to inform me. Their website is constantly updated and they always send me email alerts or sms alerts to let me know what's happening. They also have those employee bonus schemes where if you're chosen as the employee of the month, you get £100 bonus. At the end of the year, the person that won the most employee of the month contest gets £500 bonus.
The good thing about Spring is they charge the employer half of what you earn. So if you earn £20 an hour, Spring charges the employer £10 per hour, which is brilliant. The only hiccup I had with Spring is they do have a lot of undesirable clients, so do make sure you emphasize the need for an easy going employer. I would definitely recommend Spring if you're looking for a job that suits you.
The worst recruitment agency ever!! I was with them before I went to Spring. First they made me wait for almost an hour after my scheduled appointment with them. Then when I was doing my tests, their computers kept freezing and I had to like retake the tests twice. After taking the test I had to wait another half an hour before I got my results. After four miserable hours there, they said they would get back to me. I waited a week and no one got back to me. I called them and I kept getting a busy line. I emailed them, no reply. Finally after several attempts, I got through only to be told that the lady in charge of my file quit her job and I was assigned to another person. When I finally got a job interview, it was actually the employer that called me in and not the Hays guys which I found weird because normally its the recruitment agency that you correspond with.
Nevertheless, I got the job but it was a pain getting paid. Sometimes I would go two weeks without being paid and their excuse was either "we're understaffed or we had technical failure" In the 8 months I worked under Hays they paid me late over ten times and every week I had to argue with them about getting paid. Then I found out I was being underpaid. They told me I was getting paid £18 an hour and yet on my time sheet it said £14.50. Then I found out my employer was actually being charged £29.50 per hour! One time they even hanged up on me whilst I was making a complaint, and every time I called the receptionist always said "they're in a meeting can they call you back?" and they never did. Finally I had enough and quit after my friend recommended Spring to me.
My advice.. STAY AWAY FROM HAYS RECRUITMENT!! they're absolutely terrible. Unfortunately the majority of recruitment agencies are like Hays so do be careful when choosing them. But if you're still struggling to get a job, you should consider work at homes jobs (not the surveys PTC sites affiliates etc) I mean telecommute jobs like transcriptionsits, translators, virtual administrators, web designers etc. Do an extensive search on google and yahoo and you'll find them. I personally would recommend www.odesk.com or www.guru.com
Well in 30 years of work I have actually met one person who thinks that rec ags are useful. Everyone else I know in business whether in management looking to recruit or an individual looking to get work thinks that rec ags are useless. Virtually all managers I know detest using them because they simply never deliver the goods. They use them because their HR directors luv em and they have no choice. (This is not surprising as the commercial skills needed in HR are zero). All my work colleagues past and present can never seem to get an interview despite matching the job description to the letter.
The number of times I have caught them out is now to tedious to mention i.e. advertising jobs that no longer exist, sending you to interview when the job has gone or just plain lying through their teeth. In fact the reason I suspect that the UK is still languishing in recession is our economy's addiction to rec ags. They simply slow things down and are a barrier to commerce.
Of course this may sound like sour grapes on my part as I have never got a job through a rec ag (but I have had 3 interviews in 15 years, yipee!). For the past 15 years I have been working in media for 3 different companies, in fact 3 global brands. So I seem to be able to get work myself easily enough, so why can't I through a recruitment agency? Even a specialist media agency?
I cant be the only one extremely frustrated with recruitment agencies. In this current climate where every job is like gold dust, we have found ourselves a the mercy of incompetent unprofessional recruitment consultants. Now, I worked within a recruitment company for 8 years, working with some of the nicest, most professional people in my working life. It was a small independant company with a hands on Managing Director who couldn't have been more client focused. That's a rare breed in this industry. Consultant's who were unable to deliver a first class service to both client's and candidates didn't last very long. It was unfortunate, but that's the nature of the industry.
Since being made redundant 2 years ago, I have been working within a travel company in a temporary position. Apart from quite a salary cut, and temp conditions being as poor as they are, the job is okay. However, I cannot stay here forever, and need to find a job that is more stable. As most jobs now go through a recruitment agency of some sort, I have registered with many company's within Glasgow. The main high street companies are Search, Pertemps, Kelly's, HR Consultancy, and Office Angels. To varying degree's, they have been worse than useless.
Now, the standard procedure for a recruitment company is for you to email or submit your CV for a particular position that you have seen advertised. A good resourcer or consultant will match you to any suitable position available and then invite you for an initial interview or assessment. This will determin whether they deem you suitable for the job they have you in mind for. They will then submit your CV, if suitable, to the client that they are representing. If you are successful, the recruitment company will then bill the client for your services. A permanent position will usually be filled at a 20% mark up of your annual salary. So for instance, if you are earning £20,000, the company can bill approximately £4,000. That's how valuable we are to them.
Recruitment consultant's are targeted as well. It is essentially a sales job that they are in. They have to develop new business, sell candidates and basically bring in multiple times their annual salary and bonus scheme. Like any business, the more capable the consultant, the more successful they will be. Unfortunately, many are dealing in markets where candidate's may well land on their lap. I have seen some area's where the consultant really had to work for the client and the candidate, but in the market that I am searching in, the consultant will have a huge response and their only priority will be to get somebody into that position. I'm not grumbling with their purpose, only their methods.
I'm fully aware that as the recession has hit Britain that jobs have become more valuable and thinner on the ground. Therefore, its no surprise to find that quite often you wont even get an initial interview with the agency. When 10 other applicants may have the same or more experience than me, I have to expect that I might not even get a look in. What is hugely frustrating though is when I have taken the time to look up a company on the web, draft an email, update my CV and forward it to a consultant, that they dont even take the time to respond with a "No, thank you".
When I worked at the recruitment consultancy, part of my duties was to respond to every candidate. My employer absolutely insisted that all candidates at least get a response. If a CV came to me that wasn't suitable, I had a readily constructed email in a template that I would just fire back to the candidate to let them know whether they were successful or not, or whether we would file their information for future reference or not. You would be amazed at the amount of candidates who were grateful even just to be told that they were unsuccessful. I could never understand why that wasn't a general practice across the board.
I've discovered since embarking on my own futile job search that many consultant's are unable to skill match, respond in a timely or polite manner or even just give you the courteousy of an email template so that you can remove that position from your job search list. Last October, I applied for 87 jobs with various companies. Approximately 40 of those applications were through recruitment agencies. I got 3 replies. What is worse though is the following month I interviewed with 3 agencies, promised feedback within a couple of days, and have still never heard anything from any of them. I have taken time off my current job to attend interviews with agencies that cant even show me the courteousy of a 20 word email.
The worst example of poor service was with Office Angels. I attended an interview for an inhouse recruitment administrator position, and with 7 years experience, felt that I had adequate experience for the job. They invited me back for a second interview where the lady interviewing me proceeded to ask me some inappropriate questions about my previous colleagues and the clients that we had. I politely declined to answer those questions. She then cut the interview short. After a week of no response, I emailed the consultant asking if I could have some feedback regarding my interview. Her response was in 3 words "You were unsuccessful". Not even a Dear Sir, or a Regards.
Through my own work life within an agency I have discovered various consultants who are actually excellent at their jobs. If only they worked in the markets that I am job searching in. Quite a number of my ex-colleagues set up on their own, and are now self-employed. Those are the consultants who will give consideration to every single client. They cant afford to have their own name blackened by poor practice. It is the high street branches with their lack of professionalism who are giving a bad reputation to the entire industry. If only all consultants worked off their own name, perhaps they'd be more concerned with their own reputation.
I have found that my experience with recruitment agencies is an extremely negative one. I dont think there is any requirement for not responding to candidates. They would not treat a client in this manner, no matter how many clients they had to deal with in a day. So why dont they realise that a good candidate is just as valuable. Unfortunately, while there are still client's willing to pay for their services, most job searches will only be successful through agencies. This means that they will have no reason to look at their shoddy practices and improve on them. Instead, we will continue to search for jobs through people who are imcompetent, unprofessional and unable to manage their workload.
