Advantages: meet different people, company bonus,
Disadvantages: monotonous, rude customers, being taken for granted, we're listening answers
You work at a checkout and you feel that you are becoming more and more like a robot. There is a severe lack of mentally stimulating work, and interesting conversation. I long to serve interesting customers with whom I can at least have an interesting conversation.
I once served a customer who told me that you need no common sense to work at Asda. Other operators have had people say that you need not have any intelligence to work here.
You cannot complain about customers who are rude to you.
The month after Wal-Mart lost the biggest sexual discrimination case in western history I received a booklet about how Asda is a fair employer.
Operators are increasing told what to say.
Management try to encourage you to scan 22 items per minute. This does not take into account the customer who has to pack their bags.
The bags are very cheap to make and tear easily.
We're listening survey. Needs to provide more answers other than the yes and no.
Good points.
Occasionally you meet interesting people.
Company share scheme
Bonus.
Nice colleagues.
Back to the bad points
Some customers treat you as if you are stupid because the job requires no qualifications.
I worked out that my hands do the same action about 9,300 times a day.
Beware of packaging especially on whoops items.
You should also not really be using money off coupons unless you have brought the item advertised on the coupon. This also helps the manufacturer.
Wal-Mart has given money to the American republican party.
Summary: rude customers, and being taken for granted

- 13/08/09 I work on a checkout and the comments we get are terrible, I have to ask for age ID for certain items and have been reduced to tears more than once by the agression and abuse a customer has subjected me too because I asked for ID, its not always the ones who look like they maybe be difficult about this either, worse of all is the store will do nothing about this, you can call for security but by the time they have strolled down to your checkout the abusive customers have had plenty of time to leave.Asda Like it that way, as they can always get more staff but the customer is more dificult to keep as they have the choice of going else where. |

- 01/03/06 Having no Asda anywhere near me, I've not visited a store for years. But I think it's downright pathetic that some nasty people who make comments such as the ones you've quoted! Those are people with issues and don't let them get you down. I love chatting to the friendly staff in my local Sainsbury's, a smile doesn't hurt and a bit of friendly conversation doesn't cost anything either! x |

- 01/03/06 As an ASDA customer I always make a point of chatting to the check out staff. It looks like the most boring job on earth, in frankly the most boring supermarket with by and large the rudest customers of the lot.
There is an awful lot to supermarket psychology and i found this a fascinating read from "the other side of the counter". I've long had it in mind to do a series of supermarket reviews - with a twist, a snob / yob rating built in! Richard. |
