Advantages: Money, Free Food, free Taxi after 12am, the friends you make
Disadvantages: Lack of Respect from customers and managers, Not enough money, unsociable hours
I have been working for McDonalds for two years now and to be honest with you, within those two years i have learnt a lot about the company, I have made a lot of friends and had quite a bit of fun while working there.
Lots of people say that they wouldn't work in McDonalds and i wouldn't blame them because it is a hard job to do, i ain't gonna lie about it and some people love working there (like myself) and others hate it but you have to be dedicated to work there or you're gonna hate every minute of it.
The reason why i love my job so much is because of the people i have met along the way... since i started there 2 years ago nearly 100 people have come and gone in my restaurant and out of 100 people only about 15 are left. Its not for everyone... only work at McDonalds if you are willing to work really hard for very little money (hourly rates range from 3.75 for a 16 or 17 year old new starter to about £30,000 when you become an area manager) I am on 4.25 an hour (minimum wage for 18+) and i am a floor manager. Thats really bad if you think of the amount of extra work i have to do... i hardlies ever get break and i can work for very long hours. Take yesterday for example... i worked from 10.30am till 1am the following morning... with a 15 minute break which i am sure is against the law. 15 mins in nearly 15 hours!!! See what i mean... you have to be dedicated.
The hours you work can be very long but the good thing about working for McDonalds is the flexibility of hours... You can work as many or as few shifts as you want and as many hours as you want which is very good if you are a parent or a student or if you are tight on cash and want to work all the hours you want... YOU CAN!! You get free food while on shift and as this may sound good McDonalds food is not to every ones taste but you can get all sorts of food now... salads, vegetarian food, or even if you just want an ice cream its all good. Another good thing is that no matter what, you can have as many drinks as you want so even though you may be working really hard you can always have a drink.
The lack of respect from customers is one thing that would put me off working in McDonalds. There have been times when i have been in tears because of the way some customers have spoke to me. Take this scenario... i served a woman one day who was extremely rude from the moment she stepped up to the counter. She had ordered 6 Happy meals which came to around £15 because the price had just risen to £2.29. She gave me a lot of grief about the price and told her if she would like to make a complaint i could give her the Resteraunt managers name and number and to speak to him about it. I gave her the number and carried on to assemble her order. I was carrying 6 packets of fresh fries (which may i add are 168 degrees when they come out of the fryer which is REALLY hot) so i had to quickly place them in the happy meal box because they were burning my fingers. She then shouted "You f*ckin stupid c*w... you have just thrown them fries in my f*ckin happy meal boxes i want fresh f*ckin fries!!"she was really rude to me and i burst into tears because i do not expect that type of treatment when i am trying to deliver the best customer service i can. My manager had to take the rest of my order and even customers behind her in the queue were astonished at the way she reacted and spoke to me. This is just one of the many times customers have been rude and abnoxious... and as for some of the managers ... they do speak down to you and treat you like s*it but most of them are a pleasure to work for.
The work can be really difficult though. It can vary from taking customers orders to emptying and cleaning bins so be prepared to do some dirty work!!! The crew room and staff toilets are usually groggy and dirty and not fit to eat in and the toilets never have toilet paper unless you get it yourself because silly 16 year old boys who work part time on a saturday decide to block the toilet with it!! Even though i said that you make a lot of friends along the way you can also make a few enemies because with it being such a small knitted working community of about 50 people there is always some gossip or rumours or bull s*it being spread about something or someone and no matter what you tell someone, every one else who works there will find out.
Chavs... the biggest and worst thing about working at McDonalds. They cause trouble, make a mess, get drunk outside the resteraunt, shout abuse and always start fights. The bad thing about my resteraunt is that we don't have CCTV which means a few of the managers and crew members have been attacked... including myself. I was kicked down a flight of stairs for asking a group of travellers to leave. My manager was punched in the face, the windows have been smashed numerous times and one girl actually kicked the front door in. I have been spat in the face, milkshakes thrown at me, i've been called a f*ckin fat sl*g and one guy actually jumped over the counter and tried to steal money out of my till.
Most of the things i have listed here are negative things about the job.. that is because there are more negative things than posative but its what you make of the job.
I hope this review helped and if you would like any particular information i would be happy to try and help you out.
Summary: It is a good job but not for everyone.

- 23/09/06 McDonalds get away with ignoring employment laws and mistreating their staff. You sound like a hard worker who deserves a better deal, you should definitely try pub management. Then, when you get all the drinks you want at work, at least they're worth having.
My local McDonalds actually had a drive by shooting. |

- 17/05/06 Owch... thats like my sisters old job. She was in a hotel restaurant at £4.25 an hour till i got her a job at Ladbrokes where i am while i kinda semi-study lol.
Shes the same as me now at £5.45 an hour, double time Sundays, bank holidays, boxing day,new year + a couple afterwards(except a few are just paid day off) Shes 19 now and gets to sit at a desk all day instead of running around, and best of all gets to chat away to people all day lol. Can never shut her up so its like perfect for her lol.
Not great pay, but considering the work we do, its easy as hell lol
I thought over 40 hours was extra pay by law, but heard otherwise so it must not be.
And i hate doing New Years days, did like the 1st and the 2nd Jan this year but it helped pay off the xmas bills lol.
Couldnt believe so many people get out to the bookies when its xmas time, get home and get stuck into the big dinners jeeez lol |
