Advantages: Cheap, fairly tasty
Disadvantages: Obviously bad for you
I was brought up on good food, in a different way to most kids who are told that going to Maccies is a treat, I was brought up with the idea that going to Maccies was really just slumming it for your tastebuds.
I was an incredibly fat toddler, but this wasn't because I ate badly, I ate very very well, but I sure did love my food. The same applies now where I try and get to a good restaurant about once a month, I would love to go more but my salary just doesn't permit spending £150 on a meal every other week.
The point being to these statements, that in no way should going to Maccies be classed as a treat, everyone with half a brain knows that the food is bad for you. I agree some of the meals are relatively tasty, but I don't think you could ever sit there with a Big Mac and claim it's a 'superb meal'.
Because of this I believe it should be treated as just what it is, fast food. Can you imagine walking inot a proper restaurant and getting restless if you food wasn't with you and ready to eat within five minutes? No, you wouldn't, because they are two different things.
I will eat from the restaurants every so often, in much the same way that I will stop in for a Subway, Greggs or KFC. It isn't because I want 'good' food, it is because I am hungry, and anything that resembles sustanance will do.
But it's everything in moderation isn't it - if you drink too much Sunny Delight, you go orange, if you eat too much food that is bad for you then you get fat and get diabities. Maccies have made inroads to how their food is processed, sourced and cooked to try and make it a healthier option, but I don't think they should be held to blame.
The people who go into the stores are fully away that if they have a quarter pounder it isn't going to be healthy, they also know if they wanted to they could go to all manner of other places and eat something more sensible for the same price, but they won't, and do you want to know the big secret why not? Because people like burgers, people like convenience. And what could be more convenient than stopping in to a McDonalds and eating 1000 calories in 5 minutes?
The food is moderately tasty, for that I take my hat off to them, to be able to conjure up food that is edible in the time spaces they are allowed is impressive. And when they have their limited edition foods on, I normally stop in and give them a try, I'm a sucker for a good sales pitch ;)
My point is, if people were brought round to the idea that treating yourself to a McDonalds is a nonsense then perhaps we wouldn't be in a situation where we are ctahcing the Americans up in terms of obesity.
(And yes, I have a double suasage and egg mcmuffin on the way into work this morning, because I was hungover and my body needed it, did I enjoy it? Yes? Did I sit here complaining that my body is no longer a temple? No!)
Summary: For food on the go, once in a blue moon, why not?

- 18/09/08 Ooops! An excellent review posted in the wrong place. You need to look for McDs in the UK section for "restaurants" - if you search for McDs on Dooyoo then, if I recall, it's about the 3rd result.
Why not cut and paste this review in the right place, drop me a note, and I'll get Dooyoo to delete this one as it's in the section designed for those contemplating careers with Mcds.
It's otherwise an excellent review (says she who had a McDs with her son yesterday - but not as a treat - because we were hungry (and he had fish fingers so that's not too bad!)). |
