I worked in McDonalds when I was 17 to earn myself some money whilst going through college. Before I started I was absolutely dreading it because of the reputation of people who work there and it was also my first job. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting but I wouldn't exactly recommend it as the best place to work either!

The majority of the staff who worked there were lovely and really tried to make me feel comfortable and welcome in my new role and a lot of them were my sort of age which made it a bit easier settling in and having a laugh at work. Also, you get a discount card once you have been there long enough (3 months I think which I didn't manage!) and free meals on work breaks which I thought was a plus point as I love McDonalds food! The main attraction to me though was how flexible they are with working hours around you and your commitments and would definitely say they are one of the best employers for this.

Despite all these positives, I hated the uniform for a start as it was very unflattering! But the major thing I couldn't handle was the way the managers and customers treated us. Both just talk down to the normal crew members and I just found it completely degrading. For this reason, I didn't last long in my employment at Mcdonalds and left after 3 weeks! I found another retail job straight away which I much preferred. A point to note though is that other employers do seem to value the fact that I have worked at McDonalds and are always interested in this at interviews because I think they know how hard it can be to work there!

Overall, I would never recommend McDonalds as the best place to work, but it is a good job if you are looking for flexible part time work just for the short term.
