Philips SC 2001 Lumea Hair Reduction System
by lindinha42 I hate shaving, can't bear the pain of waxing and epilating, but obviously don't want to be hairy so I have always wished for a solution that would mean I could shave less, and go through less pain. IPL treatment is really expensive at salons and so as soon as I saw this product in a magazine I wanted it desperately. Although ... probably worth it over time (multiple salon appointments for this treatment would definitely add up quickly), the original price of about £400 was definitely beyond my reach. I would check from time to time if the price had gone down, and when I saw it on offer for £250, at a time when I had some Amazon vouchers to use, I had to go for it. At the moment, though, it's £350 on Amazon, which is admittedly very expensive. The Philips Lumea works on the basis of intense pulsed light, which is supposed to make the hairs fall out and eventually grow back in thinner and finer. This means that after some time of using it, shaving should be necessary a lot less often, so I was really excited to try the product. It's a handheld, white machine with a lavender stripe down the front. It has an on button along with an up/ down button to control the strength of the pulses. There is an LED display showing which setting it's on, as well as a green light which flashes while charging, and remains still when charged. This light turns orange during use when the battery starts to run low. The device filters out UV light so this doesn't reach the skin during use. It comes in a box with a very nice little storage pouch, the charger, a cleaning cloth for the window, a user guide, and a how-to DVD (which I haven't watched). Preparing to use it for the first time, it's important to check the chart with different hair and skin colours. In fact, this should be looked into before purchasing as not everyone can use this--women whose skin is too dark or their hair too light should not use this as it won't work and could actually burn your skin. This apparently has to do with the light being attracted to the pigment in the hair, and if that's not different enough to your skin colour it won't work (it also says that men shouldn't use the product, although I am less clear on why). Luckily I fall in the category that can use this product, but the chart still should be checked as it advises what setting to use it on. The helpful instructions that come with the product advise doing a test with on three different settings, and then checking the area the next day. The highest setting you've used without irritation is the setting you should continue on for that body part. The product can be used on legs, underarms, bikini line, and apparently there's now an attachment that makes it usable on facial hair. The directions state that for the first two months, it should be used on legs, underarms and bikini line every two weeks. After this period, legs should be done only every four weeks, while continuing with every two weeks for underarms and bikini line. I can get a little forgetful about when I've done it, which is a little annoying but not a huge issue. Before use, it has to be fully charged, as you should not use it while it's charging. This takes over an hour, and it doesn't really hold the charge if you charge it ahead of time, so using it does require a bit of planning. Then, shave really well, making sure not to miss any hair, because it can be more uncomfortable and can damage the machine to use it if there's any hair remaining. Using it is fairly easy. Simply press the application window (where the light comes from) against the skin, and once it's pressed all the way down the light will hold steady so it's clear you can press the button for the flash. All the little pressure points around the window have to be depressed at once, which is a safety measure so you can't accidentally flash it in your eyes or anything. Once pressed, there is a bright flash (I tend to look away even though apparently it won't damage your eyes when pressed all the way down), and pretty much no pain. It's a bit like a pinch and a sudden heat, but it's over in an instant and there's no lasting feeling. It's a bit difficult to know for sure if you're missing a bit, since it's not actually removing any hair as it goes, but I try to overlap each time with the last flash, and go up and down my legs in straight lines to minimise the chance of missing out anything. I do feel a bit like a contortionist some of the time, as getting the device in the right position on the back of my legs can be a little difficult, but overall it is fairly simple to operate. The frustrating part, though, is that the battery doesn't last very long at all. I can do just over half a leg at a time before recharging, which usually means three goes to get everywhere done. This means I'm using it for about 20 minutes at a time, and then with over an hour of charging time in between, planning to get this done can be a little difficult and it takes me most of the day. Obviously I do other things while it's charging, but I have to remember that I have another session to go. It would be much better to be able to get it all done at once. The results are good but not necessarily all I was hoping for. I was hoping not to have to shave in between uses, and I do even after 6 months of use. However I think I missed out a week in the initial two months, which may have been a problem, so I would definitely say stick to the advised schedule. I also must say that the hair is much thinner, finer, and is a bit patchy rather than everywhere which is a huge improvement. It makes the times I do shave much more pleasant and I'm not left able to see the hair still in my skin, which I could before. The hair on my legs has always been pretty thick and grew back very quickly, so this is definitely a great result. I also love that you are supposed to shave before the treatment, as one of the (many) reasons I've never liked to wax or epilate is that you have to let the hair grow to a certain length. The fact that this is pretty much pain-free is also a fantastic bonus. Obviously it's a shame that this method of hair removal isn't suitable for everyone, but if you do have the right hair colour, it's a very good product which I am pleased I bought. Unlike the dusty epilator I bought and used a couple of times a few years ago, I have actually kept up with using this and see no reason to stop. For a pain-free way to reduce hair regrowth, I think this is a great product. Read the complete review |

Braun Silk-épil 5780 Xelle Body and Face Epilator
by rhizzle For those of you who don't know, an epilator is an electrical device which consists of a number of mini tweezers. You glide the epilator along the area you wish to defuzz, and voila! The hair is gone! I have been using this Braun epilator for about six months now, and it is the first and only one I have ever tried, so cannot ... compare it to any others. The reason I initially made the purchase was to save money in the long run by epliating my bikini area myself rather than paying each month for waxes. I currently use it on my legs and bikini area. This epilator hurts. A lot. I mean....a lot. The first time I used it (on my legs) I could only manage an inch at a time, because the pain was so unbearable. Six months on it is still painful, but you definitley get used to the pain. Before I would sit for about twenty minutes building up the courage to put the thing against my skin, but now I just jump straight in. It is definitley very convenient if you are used to waxing: no more booking appointments, no having to pay for waxes monthly, and best of all no waiting for regrowth, you can re-epilate really soon after the hair starts growing back. However, there are quite a few downsides. The results are nowhere near as silky smooth as shaving or waxing. Yes, it looks fine to look at, but if you want to feel nice and soft, I would recommend shaving afterwards as well. This kind of ruins the convenience factor for me. Also, the result last nowhere near as long as Braun claim. I need to epilate at least once a week. Again, kind of counts against the convenience side of thing, but still much frequent than shaving. The biggest downside for me though is the fact that it just doesnt get every every hair. I have to go over and over the same patch of skin over and over again, which is not only time consuming but painful too! In addition, I have found that since using the Braun epilator, I have started getting much more ingrown hairs, and really painful ones too, which I never got with waxing. Overall, while I thought that epilating would be good in theory, in reality it hasn't really lived up to many of my expectations. I stick with it because I cannot abide shaving, and I spent so much on the gadget itself, but if I knew now what I knew then I would probably give it a miss. Read the complete review |

Philips Satinelle Soft Epilator
by ladyofcampfires Like most females (even the ones who hide behind the fictional 'it's more hygienic' excuse) I shave for one reason only. Society tells me I have to and I don't have the required confidence to break this norm. While hairy female pits don't disgust me in the least bit I think we can all say for certain if I were to expose such a thing to ... the world I'd get a lot of funny looks, whispers behind my back and probably even heckles in the street. It would seem that a hairy girl is an unattractive girl and really, who wants to feel unattractive? I've stuck to shaving since my hair removal days started. It's a quick and painless method although has the one terrible downside that you have to do it pretty much daily to maintain smooth, hairless body parts. I can stand the pain of waxing and much prefer the longer lasting results but home waxing kits seldom actually work and paying for a professional to do it every two or three weeks is far too expensive. Hair removal cream is too harsh on my sensitive skin, even ones made for sensitive skin and, again, it's hard to find one which properly works. So I decided to turn to epilation. A method which promised to keep my body parts smooth and hairless for weeks on end. A method I could comfortably and easily do in my own home without having to pay through the nose for it. A method which also promised pain. But how much pain? Was it bearable? Where the results worth it? I guess the only way I could find out was to try it out for myself! I opted for the Philips Satinelle Soft Epilator as it was from a brand I knew and trusted and was on offer in Tesco for £27, not a bad price at all considering the likes of Boots, Argos and Amazon sell this for £40+! Like with most of these types of products prices range considerably from shop to shop so it's definitely worth shopping around rather than buying the first one you see. The epilator comes with a number of different parts. Obviously you get your epilating head which needs to be attached to the product's body for epilation, there's also a clip on hair-lifting attachment with massage element which supposedly makes epilation much more comfortable and is ideal for first timers. This epilator also doubles up as an electric shaver so you also get a shaving head, a clip on shaving head comb attachment and a clip on shaving head protection cap. Both the epilating head and shaving head are easy to remove and put on the body, simply slide them to the left to remove and slide them to the right to put on and you're done. The clip on attachments are also easy to add, just clip them on! Also included in this epilator is a plug and adapter, needed as this epilator only works when plugged in. The cord is quite long though so you don't have to be sat right against a plug socket to remove your hair. A cleaning brush is also thrown in so you keep your epilator clean and hair free. Lastly, there's a basic looking white wash bag with draw string to keep your epilating bits and pieces together. It may be worth mentioning at this point that this epilator is not water proof so don't try to use it in the bath or shower! The epilator itself is very attractive. It's a curved shape roughly about seven inches tall and four inches wide at its widest point, it's very easy and comfortable to hold. The trim of the epilator is lilac with the middle being a glittery white colour with lilac swirls. The speed setting button is dark purple with silver trim and the product name is written along the bottom in this same shade of dark purple. It's girly looking and very pretty. Using the epilator is easy as long as you can withstand the pain. The epilator basically plucks each individual hair out of the body part you're epilating, it's like fourty tweezers attacking your legs at the same time and that's exactly what it feels like. I have noticed the longer the hair the more it hurts and, fortunately, this epilator is great for removing really short hairs so as long as you epilate about once a fortnight depending on the rate of your hair growth you shouldn't ever need to feel the maximum amount of pain this can give you. I also find the faster of the two speed settings makes the pain more bearable on fleshier parts of the skin. The slower speed setting is definitely recommended for areas close to the bone such as knees and ankles though. These are the areas which hurt most an the slower speed setting is a lot more comfortable than using the faster one. I wouldn't say my pain threshold is particularly high but then I wouldn't say it's desperately low either. I have a fair few large tattoos and am pierced in several places so I can withstand pain to an extent. I've found how well I can handle the pain of this epilator a little hit and miss really. On my legs, below my knees, the pain is perfectly tolerable and I can get the bottom of both my legs done in about ten minutes pretty fuss free. Moving up the knees and thighs, however, is a whole lot worse. Thighs are still doable but through gritted teeth, knees I'll only do if I'm feeling particularly brave and I'll more often than not quickly change my mind again and just shave this area instead! Silly me thought arms would be less painful, turns out I couldn't have been more wrong if I'd tried! I attempted my arms once and gave up after about five minutes of flinching and turning the device on and off again to give myself a rest and basically getting nowhere. I've never attempted my arms again. For me, the most tolerable way of epilating in regards to the pain is to bully a friend into doing it for me. This way, I grit my teeth and think of nice things whilst someone else quickly runs the epilator over my legs and it's all over and done with really quickly and reasonably comfortably. Doing it myself takes a lot longer and I'm constantly flinching away from the epilator and stopping and starting again. Of course, the pain this brings will vary widely from person to person. My sister owns an epilator and I've witnessed her do even the sensitive area of her armpits with hers without even flinching. She epilates pretty much her entire body and just sits there and gets it done with no fuss. Then again, my Sister is one of those strange people you could probably stab in the face and she'd claim she barely felt it.. Moisturising after epilation is highly recommend. I often find my legs go a little blotchy and red for about ten minutes after epilating and a good moisturiser really helps to calm them down. Don't apply creams before epilating though! You just need to wash the area and towel dry it before starting the process. The effects of the epliator are, in my opinion, worth the pain though. My legs are left hairless and smooth for a good two weeks before stubble starts to appear. I spend less time removing the hair and the money I've saved on razor blades and shaving gel means this has probably paid for itself in the few short months I've owned it. It doesn't take long to do and because it's meant to be used on dry skin you can pretty much do it any time. I've found it to be a life saver on unexpected hot days when I've decided to bare my legs. Rather than having to take an unnecessary bath or shower just to run the razor along my legs I can whip this out and do the process in half the time! The shaving head attachment of this is also really good and I very regularly use this. In fact I've just switched to using this instead of my usual razors now as, like I said, it saves me a lot of money in razor blades and shaving creams. This is really good to removing shorter hairs although isn't quite so effective on longer hairs thus I have to ensure I shave the moment I start to feel the hairs reappearing in order to get the full effect of the shaving aspect of the product. Again, it's really quick to use and good for those times you don't have a lot of time but need to get rid of a few hairs. It offers a really close shave providing the hairs are only a few mm in length and leaves skin feeling really smooth. The best thing is it's impossible to cut yourself using this meaning no more unsightly cuts and scabs on my body parts! Obviously this is still shaving though so it needs to be done daily or at least every two or three days to keep your body parts as smooth as you'd like them. Cleaning the device is easily done. Remove the attachment heads and run it under warm running water. Use the cleaning brush provided to get into corners and other awkward bits. The actual razor of the shaving head attachment also comes off and it's important to regularly clean this bit too as a fair bit of hair gets caught here. You just lift this bit off and, again, run it under cold water. It takes about five minutes to do and I tend to just pat it down with a towel and leave it by my window to dry properly. Within an hour it's good to use again. All in all I would say this is an effective hair removal method. Obviously the only way you're ever going to know if you have the required pain threshold to comfortably use the epilator is to try one yourself but, even if you can't, I think the razor element of this device is worth the money alone. If you only stick to this method like I do then you'll save yourself a fortune in the long run. Epilating my legs means I only have to endure this chore once a fortnight and I use can use my bath times to have a relaxing soak rather than concentrate on not ripping my legs to pieces with a razor. The shaving head offers a really quick and inexpensive way of shaving although still needs to be done regularly to keep in top of it. I would completely recommend this epilator. The only fault I can pick with it is that it doesn't hold any charge. I think having the option to use it plugged in or running on batteries would be more convenient particularly for weekends away. I'm over the moon I managed to get such a good price for this epiltator although I still don't think I'd have been disappointed if I'd paid £40 for it in a different store. Read the complete review |
