Braun Silk Epil 5780 Xelle Body & Face Epilator
Advantages: No more waxing or shaving!
Disadvantages: Painful (obviously), not as effective as hoped
For those of you who don't know, an epilator is an electrical device which consists of a number of mini tweezers. You glide the epilator along the area you wish to defuzz, and voila! The hair is gone!
I have been using this Braun epilator for about six months now, and it is the first and only one I have ever tried, so cannot compare it to any others. The reason I initially made the purchase was to save money in the long run by epliating my bikini area myself rather than paying each month for waxes. I currently use it on my legs and bikini area.
This epilator hurts. A lot. I mean....a lot. The first time I used it (on my legs) I could only manage an inch at a time, because the pain was so unbearable. Six months on it is still painful, but you definitley get used to the pain. Before I would sit for about twenty minutes building up the courage to put the thing against my skin, but now I just jump straight in. It is definitley very convenient if you are used to waxing: no more booking appointments, no having to pay for waxes monthly, and best of all no waiting for regrowth, you can re-epilate really soon after the hair starts growing back.
However, there are quite a few downsides. The results are nowhere near as silky smooth as shaving or waxing. Yes, it looks fine to look at, but if you want to feel nice and soft, I would recommend shaving afterwards as well. This kind of ruins the convenience factor for me. Also, the result last nowhere near as long as Braun claim. I need to epilate at least once a week. Again, kind of counts against the convenience side of thing, but still much frequent than shaving.
The biggest downside for me though is the fact that it just doesnt get every every hair. I have to go over and over the same patch of skin over and over again, which is not only time consuming but painful too! In addition, I have found that since using the Braun epilator, I have started getting much more ingrown hairs, and really painful ones too, which I never got with waxing.
Overall, while I thought that epilating would be good in theory, in reality it hasn't really lived up to many of my expectations. I stick with it because I cannot abide shaving, and I spent so much on the gadget itself, but if I knew now what I knew then I would probably give it a miss.
Summary: Great in theory, not so great when put into practice :(
