Since obtaining a Wilkinson Sword Intuition razor when they were initially introduced a good few years ago, I have spent a small fortune on replacement blades, particularly with their current price being in excess of £6. Whilst I initially found the blades to be kind to my skin type, which I would describe as normal, over the past twelve months or so, they have been causing me considerable irritation, particularly under my arms and on my knees, which would become sore and red. I had been considering making a purchase of an epilator for several years, but never took the plunge, as I knew very little about them and was afraid it would be one of those items that would be used for a few months and then placed into a drawer never to be seen again.
However, determined to rid my poor sore skin of the harsh blades belonging to my Wilkinson Sword, I spoke with a few friends and work colleagues who own epilators and asked for their thoughts. As they provided me with information on their positive experiences I decided to carry out a little of my own research to find a model best suited to my needs. As my knowledge was very basic, in all honesty, I really did not know what I was looking for, but my decision was made when I discovered the Braun Silk-èpil Wet and Dry 7, 7681 on Amazon with a reduced price of £69.99 with Boots selling the identical product for £129.99. I would point out that there are two versions of this epilator with model number 7281 not being suitable for the face. My purchase was made and I eagerly awaited my new beauty item and this review discusses my experience. Whilst this review is fairly lengthy, in addition to reviewing the product, I have tried to cover all of the questions I had prior to carrying out my research,
WHAT IS EPILATING?
Whilst I am certain that the majority of consumers are aware of epilating, I thought it appropriate to add a short paragraph explaining the process together with the benefits. In a nutshell, epilating is pulling hairs out from the root and as a result, the surface of the skin is left feeling soft and smooth as well as being hair free for a period of approximately four weeks. Studies have proven that for those who regularly epilate, the rate of hair growth lessens, so I am hopeful that in years to come I will have minimal body hair.
WHY DID I CHOOSE THIS PARTICULAR EPILATOR?
In addition to the brilliant price, it was the fact that the epilator is claimed to be the best short hair removal from Braun and can be used wet or dry. Unfortunately, I'm somewhat of a wimp when it comes to pain, as I have a very low pain threshold and I anticipated that using the product in the bath would help alleviate this issue. Whilst I do not experience any problems with facial hair, the epilator can be safely used on the face, which would be beneficial for some consumers. I was amazed to note that the epilator can remove hairs as short as 0.5mm, which is a real positive to this product, particularly as I cannot bear feeling hair on my body, particularly on my legs.
WHAT DID I RECEIVE FOR MY MONEY?
The rechargeable wet and dry epilator was neatly packaged inside an eye-catching box together with four caps, namely trimmer, facial, efficiency and sensitive area. In addition, I received a shaver head, waterproof storage pouch with a corded upper section, charger for a two pin socket, a small cleaning brush, a pack of 16 Olay cooling wipes and an instruction booklet.
PREPARING FOR USE
Prior to making my purchase, I was of the opinion that the body hair had to be a specific length prior to using the epilator, similar to that of waxing and this would have deterred me from making my purchase. However, I discovered that the hair should measure less than 5mm otherwise it is recommended that a shaver be initially used, which obviously defeats the object, particularly in my case with the skin irritation caused by my razor. I had learned from friends that it is best to exfoliate the skin for a few weeks prior to use and whilst I generally use exfoliating body products on a twice weekly basis, I opted for a week of daily use to ensure that my skin was well prepared for the pain that I was soon to inflict.
It is recommended that the user familiarises themselves with the epilator prior to use and whilst I am generally one who dives straight in and cannot be bothered with instructions, I ensured that I was fully aware of how to correctly use the product. Despite the booklet initially appearing a little daunting due to its 75 pages, fortunately, only 6 are in English and offer text which is both easy to read and understand. Whilst I have no intention of discussing the contents of the user guide, I would advise that a few lines that made me chuckle are those in relation to people who have never before used an epilator where it states that the skin needs to adapt to epilation with the discomfort decreasing with repeated use. In other words, the epilator is going to hurt like hell, but don't worry, as your body will get used to it!
The epilator itself offers an appearance similar to that of a lady shaver with its measurements of 13 cm in length, approximately 6 cm in width and 3½ cm in depth and has been manufactured from a durable attractive looking plastic. In addition to being lightweight with the boxed product being 680g, it is ergonomically shaped, so offers extreme comfort during use. When epilating for the first time it is advisable to use in the evening, so that any potential reddening can diminish overnight. In addition to exfoliating my skin, I used one of the alcohol free wipes accompanying my epilator although I cannot see me repurchasing, as I felt assured that my skin was well prepared.
It was necessary to charge the epilator prior to use, which took approximately an hour where a green light flashed to inform me that it was charging and permanently shines when fully charged. I am well impressed with the charger, particularly as it offers a power cable of approximately three metres although it is recommended that the epilator be used without the cable. Whilst the epilator offers 40 minutes of use following each charge, it is advisable to recharge following each use.
USING THE EPILATOR
The booklet provides information on using the epilator wet and dry and for my first use I opted for dry, so I could see exactly what I was doing. The skin needs to be dry and grease free and I initially opted for my legs. When I learned that the epilator features the new Close-Grip Technology where 40 tweezers keep close contact with the skin I almost freaked, as tweezing my eyebrows is painful enough with just one pair of tweezers! I looked at the head of the epilator and was able to witness an array of tiny silvery coloured dots, which were located next to the rollers on the outer sections of the epilator in addition to a number of scary longer narrow blades. However, as the saying goes, where's no pain, there's no gain, so I began to proceed.
I favour the safety feature of the lock keys, which are small buttons; one of which requires pressing prior to turning the circular on/off dial. However, despite it offering a good size of 2½ cm, I found it a little difficult to move as I had to apply a little force and this could prove to be difficult for those consumers suffering with mobility issues in their hands and/or fingers. Whilst there is a choice of two speed settings, namely extra gentle and extra efficient, being the baby that I am, I initially opted for the gentle. I was well impressed with the smart light than illuminates as soon as the appliance is switched on and I learned that it produces an almost daylight condition, which enabled me to keep a close eye on what I was doing and ensure that I didn't miss any hairs.
The epilator makes a whirring sound when switched on and as directed I stretched my skin as I placed the appliance onto its surface. Due to the pivoting features, the epilator effortlessly glided over my skin and instead of the rigid uncomfortable plucking sensation that I had anticipated, I experienced fairly gentle twanging, which surprised me, particularly as there were forty tweezers having a field day with my skin! I did not need to apply any pressure to my skin and simply allowed the epilator to carry outs it job with me slowly guiding it to the appropriate areas.
It was necessary to move the epilator in different directions where it slowly but surely ripped out each of the unwanted hairs. It took me approximately five minutes to fully remove the hair from one leg; after which I experienced a slight burning sensation with the skin being a little hot to the touch as well as it offering redness, so I immediately applied a good cream to relax and cool the skin. I was absolutely thrilled with the results, as the surface of my skin felt wonderfully soft and smooth with the epilator achieving far superior results to any razor that I've previously used. I continued to complete both of my legs as well as my underarms and arms, but I have no intention of using the appliance on my bikini area, particularly as my friends have warned me that it is extremely painful! However, saying that, I might just give it a try in the future if I'm brave enough!
I would point out that products containing alcohol, such as perfume or deodorant should not be used following epilation, which I discovered for myself despite going against the warning in the booklet - ouch!! For my next use some four weeks later, I used the epilator in the bath (without the power cord, of course) and found it to be more comfortable, particularly the after sensation, as my skin didn't feel as hot or display as much redness. However, as previously mentioned, the skin becomes accustomed to being epilated, so the effect following each use will no doubt become a little easier.
CLEANING THE EPILATOR
I'm not going to discuss the cleaning process, as it is fully detailed in the accompanying booklet. However, I would advise that it is extremely easy and obviously important to obtain optimum results from your purchase.
OTHER INFORMATION, PRICE AND AVAILIABILITY
The epilator comes with a 2 year guarantee although this does not cover damage or normal wear and tear.
As previously mentioned, Boots are asking £129.99 for this epilator, which is quite frankly ridiculous, particularly when it is available on Amazon for £69.99 inclusive of postage and packing.
My only grumble with this epilator is the on/off dial, as it is a little awkward to use. However, the positive factors relating to this epilator far outweigh this one negative and as I was forking out approximately £6 every three months for new blades for my Wilkinson Sword Intuition Razor, my epilator will soon have paid for itself. As a result, I am awarding a five star rating together with a full recommendation.
Summary: A fantastic epilator for the quick removal of body hair
