Braun Silk Epil Xelle 5380
Advantages: Stylish (for an epilator!), light
Disadvantages: Results are a little disappointing
I have extremely sensitive skin, so shaving constantly results in an embarrassing and itchy rash, and waxing removes not just the hair, but most of the skin too. I thought an epilator should in theory do the job of a wax but without the damage to the skin and decided on Braun as it is a reputable brand, it promised to remove short hairs for up to 3 weeks, and it seemed a reasonable price.
This epilator is mains powered and comes with a small bag, shaver attachment. cleaning brush and a sort of blade guard which effectively puts a small plastic barrier in between the rotating tweezers and your skin. This seemed a little pointless to me as it means you can't get the tweezers as close to your skin and therefore remove the shorter hairs. Having said that, even without the guard I couldn't seem to get the tweezers to grip and remove the shorter hairs, which means that there is never a smooth finish but rather a slight stubbliness remaining (although nothing like the prickly hair which grows back following shaving).
I have never used the shaver attachment as I thought this may irritate my skin like disposable razor blades, and also because I am a little too stubborn to epilate my legs and then shave them as well! The cleaning brush and pouch are useful extras, it is quite satisfying to give the epilator a good clean after use and then put it away knowing that it won't be affected by dust or any other allergens or irritants that could make their way onto your skin at the next use.
The epilator has two speed settings and a light to help you to see if there are any areas you have missed. The light is very useful, even with natural daylight and a strong ceiling light there have still been times where I shine the epilator light to discover that there is some hair still to be removed. The two speed settings on the other hand seem unnecessary - I at first tried the slower speed thinking that this may be less painful - wrong! The blades rotate faster on the second speed which means that the job gets done ever so slightly quicker and the amount of time spent in pain is reduced by a fraction, and so I can't personally see the advantage of having a slower speed to choose from. It is quite noisy when it is switched on, and does look a little menacing when the tweezer blades start rotating furiously!
This epilator is easy to use and nice to hold, however if you were hoping for a painfree experience, this is not it! The results do last longer than shaving (although not up to the 3 week mark I was hoping for), but you will struggle to get a smooth finish like that from razor blades in the first place. I will continue to use this product as it is more painful in the short term, but less painful in the long term than the irritation caused by shaving. I am hoping that the more I use it,the better the results will be and the longer they will last.
