Advantages: Taste, quality, style, speed, ease of use
Disadvantages: Can spew coffee out of wrong places if you misalign pod; some drinks are small; pods are not cheap
Originally sceptical about "pod" coffeemakers due to the cost, I purchased this Tassimo mainly because of the range of drinks it produces. Having previously owned an espresso maker with a milk steamer nozzle, the Tassimo seemed like a quicker alternative to producing tall espresso-based coffee drinks with minimal effort. The fact that it can also produce hot chocolate was a selling point too, as we have three children who love it.
The Tassimo looks great on the worktop, and feels solid, modern and stylish. It is easy to clean and maintain - you run a "cleaning cycle" occasionally - simple. You can by the pods from most supermarkets, or online from the Tassimo website, so they are easily available.
On using the Tassimo for the first time, we made Americano (our usual), and the taste was fantastic - better than most coffee bars' offerings, for sure! We have tried most of the drinks available now, and the quality is consistently high. It is great for visitors, but we find it really shines in the morning when you want that first hit of caffeine - it is so easy and quick, it has revolutionised our breakfast routine so that we enjoy quality fresh coffee before our busy days start. It takes less than a minute to make a 1-pod coffee such as Americano, caffe crema etc. and less than 2 minutes to make 2-pod coffees (i.e. ones with a creamer pod to be used after the coffee pod e.g. latte, cappuccino).
The water container fits neatly on the back of the machine, and seems sturdy and easy to slot in place. If you put it on wrong, the machine simply doesn't work, so it seems difficult to wreck the machine by accidently putting it together wrongly.
To summarise, the taste, quality, speed and ease of use are all top notch. It seems to be a sturdy, reliable appliance that will make fab coffee for years to come (we are currently a year in).
If I had to give any negative points, the main one is that if you slightly misalign the pod before closing the lid, it can cause hot coffee, water and grains to spew willy-nilly out of the machine and all over your kitchen (very messy, believe me!). This has happened to me a few times, and is very frustrating. Also, some of the drinks are annoyingly small, but this can be overcome by buying ones that aren't (drink size is indicated on pod pack). Obviously the drinks are down to personal taste, and most are excellent, but I find that some of those with a "creamer" pod taste a bit fake and UHT-y (mainly the Carte Noire Cappuccino). Despite these slight drawbacks, I would highly recommend this coffee maker.
Summary: I would definitely recommend this coffeemaker
