It's on the expensive side but worth it for the amazing coffee and ease of use

After years of instant coffee and yearning after the latest trends in coffee machines, my husband and I decided to treat ourselves to a late Christmas present. Although there were a lot of machines to choose from, we thought this one was the most 'all encompasing'. We didn't want one that was high maintenance or high on cleaning after every use. Nor did we want something that was so simple, the coffee just wasn't up to scratch. So we bought the Nespresso Lattissima from John Lewis. It was on special offer at the time (not exactly in the sale) and we managed to bag ourselves the last one. We set it up straight away and spent most of the next couple of days trying out new coffee pods to see what flavours we liked, before placing a rather expensive order online for a big box full of pods! There are some really surprising good points about this machine: The water reserve is pretty big and, only drinking about two cups a day each, we don't have to replenish it too often. When we do replenish, it's really straight forward. The milk reservoir is detatchable (so that you can keep it in the fridge in between cups) and it's fab, giving two options of frothiness to add to the coffee. There's four settings on the machine- Americano, espresso, latte and cappuccino, of which we've tried them all out. You're also able to set these buttons up really easily to suit the cups that you're using. For example, at first, it was only half filling our big mugs with coffee and frothy milk but upon reading the instructions, you just hold the button in to 'save' the last cup that you made manually and the next time you make it, it replicates what you did. I found this feature VERY handy! Also, if you just fancy your coffee a little different that day (i.e. not using the presets) then it's simple enough to do it all manually. The cleaning of it is really easy, which really appeals to my lazy nature. The milk carton and nozzle are completely detatchable and washable as normal (not sure about dishwasher as I'M the dishwasher in my house!). To clean the pipes, there's a button that you're recommended to press after every few cups and it just sends some hot water and steam through them to cleanse them. We just use a small glass to collect the 'dirty water' (in reality, it's actually just hot water with milk remenants). One of the negatives is that the coffee pods, should you use them often, can be pretty expensive. They can only be ordered on the Nespresso online members club and I think it works out to be about 20p per cup, which is WAY cheaper than you would pay at Starbucks but if you drink multiple cups per day, it's maybe not great on the bank balance. As it is, we're happy to pay what we do because the coffee is fabulous and we only use about 4 per day (maximum). The selection of coffee on offer is also great- we bought the 'starter' pack which included at least one sleeve of every type, including their decaf options. This gave us an excellent opportunity to test them out. We now have a shortlist of five favourites that we reorder. Of course, you can only make one cup of coffee at a time, so if you have a housefull, this could prove rather time consuming. We also have a kettle for these instances where I just don't want to 'waste' my pods or my time making 10 cups of coffee!! We've never had any type of technical issues with this machine and long may it continue. Excellent buy!

If you drink a lot of coffee, this machine will go the distance for you reliably, every day.

Imagine this: New Year's Day morning. And your coffee maker dies. What?! Yes, there were tears and gnashing of teeth. My husband and I bought our first DeLonghi Nespresso Lattissima years ago when Nespresso was just introduced. We had a brand new kitchen and my husband wanted a posh coffee maker to complete the package. When this machine died, we hit the post Christmas sales to find a new one. I thought, it's been years. There must be loads more Nespresso and pod machines now we could choose from. There are, but after looking at all of them, we just ended up buying the same model again. We're looking forward to another many years happy use with our new DeLonghi. The downside of course with pod coffeemakers is you can only make one cup at a time. A bit of a nuisance when you're having a dinner party. You need an old fashioned coffee pot for that scenario. Plus, we don't use the milk steaming option. Personally I find it too messy and I don't want to be washing up fiddly bits of equipment when I'm trying to relax with a cup of coffee. But my husband loves the gadgety option of being able to froth up the milk "if he ever wanted to." If you want a machine that is going to reliably make you an average of 10 cups of coffee a day for about five years (or more!), this is the one for you.
