I enjoy coffee and most of all I enjoy drinking coffee in an outside café watching the world go by. In recent years the United Kingdom has been making something of an effort in generating a café culture. With street terraces and patio heaters to enable outside eating and drinking, most cities now have at least one area where café culture reigns supreme. However, for a real café experience I still think one needs to be in continental Europe. This espresso machine is as close as you get to the raw flavour of coffee served in a continental café and if you close your eyes you can transport yourself there as you sip the bittersweet taste of your espresso shots.
The machine is modern looking and with its brushed aluminium look is not out of place in my kitchen. As with all quality coffee machines it has quite a large footprint. I have found though that the more compact machines tend to come from the cheaper end of the market and the resulting coffee is not to the same standard. Delonghi have been making coffee machines for many years and are a recognised mid/top end of the market brand. I would suggest that they have a high trust rating amongst coffee drinking customers.
Making an Espresso with this machine is simplicity itself. You simply add beans and water. The water jug can be withdrawn and easily filled and the beans go in to the top of the machine.
As an Espresso machine this is versatile and other coffees can also be made with ease including cappuccino with the integral steamer. The machine also has a self-clean function and when first used always performs a short rinse mode to ensure that the coffee taste is consistently good.
Each coffee takes about 30 seconds to percolate through and the machine is one of the easiest to use. I much prefer these machines to the now fashionable custom coffee machines where one is tied into purchasing a particular brand of refills. This machine allows you to explore the world of coffee by using different brands, strengths and flavours of bean as you see fit.
Overall this machine is a great product for making coffee and stands significantly above the trendy coffee system machines out currently. There is a price hit on this though as you are unlikely to see much change out of about 550 pounds. Be under no illusion - this is a machine for the coffee fanatic. If you like the taste of strong rich coffee and have a love of continental cafe culture then this machine will soon become a much used and much loved kitchen addition. If you are a light drinker of coffee and don't enjoy the strength of taste that comes from freshly ground coffee then I would suggest that it may be more difficult to justify the expenditure on this kit which clearly marks out the upper end of the coffee machine market.
