I was very excited when my friend passed me on her Dolce Gusto coffee pod machine when she decided to upgrade hers. I had always wanted one but it wasn't a necessity so I never purchased one myself. I wouldn't call myself a coffee drinker, mainly because I am fairly picky in the types of coffee I will drink. I can't stand instant coffee and I am definitely usually a tea drinker. I am however partial to a caramel latte when out and about as the quality of coffee you get in the likes of Costa and Starbucks is outstanding.
I had tried lattes from this machine when it belonged to my friend so immediately stocked up on the pods. The pods don't come cheap and are usually £3.75 for a box of 16. If you buy the lattes this means only 8 cups of coffee as you get 8 coffee pods and 8 milk pods. The regular coffees are much better value for money but I am a latte lover! I have no experience of other brands but I believe that the main disadvantage of the Dolce Gusto ones is that the water measure isn't pre-programmed and has to be done my site. It helps to have latte glasses so you can judge when you need to stop the water feed.
When I first used the machine, I had no idea what I was doing. I had no instructions and it was my husband who had been shown how to use it and had failed to pass on his wisdom! However I was desperate to try it out and surprisingly managed to figure it all out by myself. It was ever so easy to get to grips with.
The quality of the coffee for this machine is superb. It has all the advantages of an instant coffee with a much richer coffee flavour. I would like it to be a little stronger for my taste but overall I am very satisfied with this machine. There is a vast array of different pods available in supermarkets and even more online. I have only tried the latte and mocha ones so far. The only real down point is that the water isn't heated as much as I would like, I get round this my filling my latte glass with hot water to warm it before emptying it and placing in under the dispenser, I do find this helps.
