Magimix Nespresso M150
Advantages: Makes authentic espresso in minutes.
Disadvantages: Descaling is time consuming.
During my first trip to Rome a few years ago I fell in love with "proper" coffee. My parents always drank instant and I didn't consider myself to be a coffee drinker so I never frequented the expensive coffee houses in town. However, my first espresso was an eye-opener. Dark and strong enough to stand the spoon up in, the flavour was a revelation. I could actually taste the roasted beans and I discovered that coffee tasting is an art form, rather like wine tasting. Each bean, when it is grown and where determines the flavour specific to that region. My husband bought me this beautifully stylish Magimix coffee machine from John Lewis for just under £200. It uses Nespresso capsules which can be bought online from their website or from one of their shops, based mainly in and around London, although they are now popping up in high end department stores too. The Nespresso Club is easy enough to use and you feel like you are a VIP member of an exclusive group of coffee lovers. The website gives all the information you need about the different blends as well as offering the full range of machines and posh accessories such as little packets of sugar and gorgeous cups and saucers. You have to order 50 capsules at a time for packaging reasons and this costs around £20 which works out at around 30p a cup! Cheap as chips. They are delivered by courier in stylish black packaging and the website features limited edition blends 3-4 times a year so you can always try something new.
The machine itself is compact, though very solid and well made. It is black with crome trims and features an arm for frothing hot milk or dispensing hot water. There is a metal drip tray and everything dismantles in seconds for easy cleaning. If you live in a hard water area the machine will need descaling a couple of times a year. A set of two descaling kits are available from the Nespresso site for around £5 and it is worth investing in these to keep your machine in excellent condition. The box also contained a set of one white "lungo" cup and saucer and an espresso cup with saucer to get you started, also a full set of capsules, one of each variety (20 in all) to try. The coffees are rated according to strength and also include a decaffinated variety which is delicious.
Making a cup of coffee is easy. You simply fill the reservoir with cold water and switch on the machine. When the machine is ready the indicator light goes off and you can place a capsule into the filter arm and clip it into the machine, just like in an Italian coffee house! At the touch of a button the water is forced through a heated chamber into the capsule and a thin stream of rich dark coffee comes down into the cup which is waiting underneath. The noise is very satisfying and the whole house quickly fills with the aroma of fresh coffee. Lovely. I love a really strong espresso but my husband prefers a lungo, a bigger cup for a less intense flavour. I also like to experiment by adding flavoured syrups and only demerara sugar will do to sweeten!
For a cappucino you can add frothy milk to a shot of espresso, or why not try a macchiato with a blend of chocolate and coffee mixed with hot milk? Whatever your poison, the Magimaix M150 gives excellent results. It is without a doubt my favourite kitchen gadget of all time and I would highly recommend it.
Summary: A taste of Italy, wherever you live.
