Advantages: Does exactly what it claims to do
Disadvantages: Having to reapply the gloss
A few months ago mum and I had been to pick up my new glasses in the Nottingham Boots store when we were waylaid by an Estee Lauder sales person asking if we wanted a free make over.
After checking we had enough time on the parking we agreed and were duly made up by the ‘consultant’. They were offering the make overs as a promotion to promote a new range of lip colour along with a new range of foundation.
As part of the make over the consultant would apply the colour she thought would suit you the most of the new lip colour range. In this case it was the Double Wear stay in place lip duo.
Packaging
The box is a rich dark blue colour, a long thin rectangular shape. It bears the gold Estee Lauder logo and the name of the product in gold lettering. At the end of the box is the shade. In my case I ended up buying shade 12 which is called Eternal Plum.
Upon opening the box the tube of lip colour slides out. It is a double ended tube with the colour being in one end and then the top coat of gloss being in the other end. The bit in the middle where the caps screw on is gold.
On either end of the tube is a small gold sticker which details the shade again for you – on the gloss top coat end you have a sticker which say Clear and this has no bearing on the overall shade of the lip colour.
The Claim
This lip colour claims to stay in place no matter what you throw at it. It also claims that it will be able to keep your lips moisturised throughout the day without the need to reapply the colour.
The consultant who did my make over was very eager to point out that she was wearing the same lip colour as she was applying to me and it hadn’t shifted all day. Her lips certainly looked perfect to me.
I however, was a little sceptical. I have tried these stay on lip colours before and ended up with dried and cracked lips along with looking like Hilda Ogden from Corrie to say the least. Yet, when I looked in the mirror after the consultant had finished with me I was immediately stunned into handing over my hard earned cash for one of these wonder wands. So why?
The lip stick
When I got home I ripped open the packaging and pulled out my lip colour. I felt a bit pampered as I usually only buy these things when I absolutely need them and I hadn’t gotten any new cosmetics for ages. The colour in the coloured end of the tube was a rich, deep red colour which does resemble a ripe plum. The colour appears to have gold shiny bits in it and this adds to the sheeny effect when it is applied. I was now eager to try even though I still had on the colour the consultant had applied in the shop.
Opening the coloured end of the tube by unscrewing it I pulled out the wand. This is a long wand with a foamy bit at the end. The lip colour is on the end. There seems to be loads of colour at first but I thought I’d give it a go.
I stood infront of the mirror and removed the make up I was already wearing. I freshly lined my lips with my fave lip liner and then began to fill in with the colour by smoothing the wand slowly over my lips. I say slowly because the colour is quite dark.
At first it seemed to be patchy but as I moved the wand back over my lips it spread the colour more evenly. In a few seconds I had lovely coloured lips and all I had to do was wait for it to dry before applying the top coat of clear moisturising gloss.
Looking a bit like a painted goldfish I waited for it to dry which it did in a few seconds and then opened the clear gloss. This smells quite sweet and the smell is quite strong but not overpowering or off putting. The applicator that comes with the gloss is a brush allowing you to paint on the gloss over the colour.
Result
Fabulous, shiny, glossy, rich, vibrant deep colour. My lips didn’t feel like they were caked in make up as I’d experienced with other products that made the same claims. My lips didn’t feel dry either, just a bit like I was wearing a lip gloss. The smell is fabulous as once out of the tube the strong sweet smell turns into a lighter, more cosmetic smell.
It stayed put through all I could throw at it too. I decided to use it for work on the Monday morning. I always use a tinted moisturiser and applied this first as it does help if you use a base to give the colour something to cling to, so to speak.
I ate breakfast, lunch and dinner with the girls later in the evening and didn’t need to reapply. The only thing I did need to top up on was the lip gloss as your lips do start to dry out after an hour or two but this isn’t major.
Value for money
This is excellent value. It was a bit pricier than my other lippies but I keep this one for best when I am going out in the evening or on a special occasion as I feel it a bit too pricey and deep in colour for everyday wear.
Price £17.00 for 8.4 ml (4.2 ml of each of the colour and the gloss)
Recommendation
I would definitely recommend this product. When you use it you only need to apply once so in the long run this will work out much more cost effective for me. Lips look and feel glossy and moisturised and long gone are the dry and cracked lipsticks that L’oreal and Max Factor produced when trying to achieve a long lasting lip stain.

- 22/04/09 Brilliant review. Very useful for me as I have tried the L'Oreal version and like you found it too drying. Good point about the colours being too deep for every day. |
