I bought this hard drive so I could backup the data on my laptop, and also to store photos and videos, and it hasn't disappointed me. When I plugged it into my laptop for the first time, it asked me did I want to install the software that comes on it, and this was a very simple process. After it was installed, the hard drive automatically backed up all the data on my "C" drive, and now everytime I connect the hard drive it scans and backs up any new data I have saved on my laptop, making the process completely hassle free.
The specification boasts its "turbo USB" software, which is designed to speed up data transfer. I can't really say if this does much because I haven't used the product without this software, but the data transfer speeds are pretty good, generally somewhere around 20MB per second.
I also use this product with my xbox 360, connecting it via USB so I can watch videos and look at photos on the TV, rather than just the computer screen. I have found this really useful, but if you want to make sure the format is FAT32, not NTFS.
There is a small hum while it is in use, but nothing major.
