Advantages: looks great and feels great
Disadvantages: flimsy connection, and quite expensive
I was very impressed with this product- it looks great, it matches my macbook pro, and feels like a quality construction.
There's just one weak link in the chain, and that's where it eventually failed me. The entire product is made from chunky metal, it's solidly put together, but the really really important bit, where my drive connects to my computer, that's where they decided to cut corners. The usb plug feels so flimsy that when you plug in the cable and wiggle it the whole plug flexes and bends- I had some problems with the drive cutting out in use, and it required me to wiggle the connection to get it going again.
The included usb cable is very short- but that's ok for a mobile drive like this. One day the drive would not work any more, and no amount of wiggling would get it going again. I looked at the plug and I could see that one of the connections had snapped inside.
I emailed freecom and explained to them that my drive had stopped working and that it was only the plug which was the problem, I suspected the drive inside was fine. I asked if they could send me a replacement case, but they declined, instead asking me to ship the drive back to them, something I was unsure of as I had no backup of the drive and it's rather pull the drive out of the enclosure than be send a brand new drive without my precious data. Customer support were quite dim witted but assured me my drive would be shipped back to me data intact, I thought great i'll get a new unit and my old drive back- 2 for the price of one!
That didn't happen, and after about a month I get my drive back with a note saying they wouldn't do anything with it because i'd requested for them to not touch my data (brilliant waste of postage both ways and a month of my life waiting).
So I took to the product with a pair of pliers to release the working drive from it's case- it was surprisingly hard work and confirmed that the rest of the drive is extemely well made (except for the bit that matters).
The drive worked perfectly and I put it into a new enclosure but it is now the second freecom drive i've had where the drive enclosure has failed me. Freecom products look and feel great, but I can't recommend them on a quality basis
Summary: not recommended, my second drive to break from freecom
