I now have two of these beauties at work due to having to handle very large file formats (.cod, .xtf etc). We bought this LaCie Grand Hard Disk about eight months ago when we had to transport a lot of files from a client across the country. I was not only looking for an external hard drive that had a hard and reliable memory capacity, but was going to be durable during transport.
The Lacie external hard drives have a good reputation from my research before purchasing one of these of being reliable and long lasting. The company started in 1987 in the USA and thus is a long standing company; they have won many awards for their innovative hardware designs. The design of a hard drive is not something that would initially sway me to buy a product like this, but they do have some amazing designs and interesting designers.
This model of LaCie hard drive is no exception; it has a sleek matt silver casing which is made of aluminium. This is what makes LaCie a quality product; it is extremely hardwearing and long-lasting. It is very heavy, about 1kg in weight and I think this again highlights the quality that has gone into this hard drive, it could definitely not be described as flimsy. This is a compact and inconspicuous size for sitting on top of your desktop pc, being approximately 20cm x 10cm x 5cm.
As mentioned earlier this needed to be couriered to clients all across the country and it is imperative that the data arrives securely. I have no worries about sending this hard drive and it arriving broken or wiped. The front of the LaCie has a glossy silver curved cover which has a glowing red cross when turned on. The back is simple with the two output cables (a USB 2.0 and the power supply cable). The USB 2.0 connection makes it compatible with almost all computers; this is particularly handy if you have to use/send it abroad.
The hardwearing casing means that this product is not only very study but also stops the device overheating. I have this on 8 hours a day at work using it constantly and have not yet had any problems with either overheating nor crashing. This particular model holds 1 Terabyte of data, it also has a very fast data transfer rate of around 60MB/s, which is pretty fast for an external hard drive at this price. The difference in performance between this and my one at home is incredible.
This LaCie Grand Hard Disk 1TB comes with a USB boost function which enables the faster transfers, as well as automated backup technology which makes it extremely reliable. The installation is pretty simple, with a standard disc and instructions, unfortunately to move or edit any data on this external hard drive on different pc's I found I have had to install the hard drives software on that particular pc. This can be a bit of a downfall but does stop data going missing or getting lost.
This model is compatible with Windows Vista and upwards and comes with a 2 year warranty, however I think it will last us a lot longer than this. I would certainly be surprised if it didn't. This retails for about £100 and is well worth the money in my opinion. 5 out of 5 :)
