Seagate Expansion Portable Drive 1 TB
When I noticed my external hard drive was nearly at full capacity I decided to start looking for another one. My previous Hard drive was 500GB which is plenty to back up my files if set as just a straight system back-up however I also store my videos, including a lot of films, and my music on external hard drives so that my laptops hard drive isn't clogged up with loads of files that I don't always use. I also do this so I can easily take my files and use them on other peoples computers so I don't need to take my laptop to someone's house If say we want to watch a film that I only have a digital copy of.
Since I needed the extra space I went for this, the Seagate Expansion Portable Drive 1TB. I knew that Seagate was a reliable brand as I know people who use their products and they always seem to get good reviews. The fact that the word portable was in the name was great as portable was exactly what I was looking for, nothing too bulky. The 1TB capacity was also exactly what I wanted, plenty of space for all my files and a complete back-up of my laptop.
One of the other main features that I wanted, that this Hard Drive has, was for it to be USB bus powered. Meaning that no extra power supply is needed to run the hard drive. This is great as I hate having loads of cables getting tangled up when things are moved around so having one USB for both power and connecting the hard drive to the computer is great.
The portable side of this hard drive is one of its flaws. Not surprisingly my 500GB hard drive is smaller, and therefore more portable, but since purchasing this I have come across much smaller hard drives. Don't get me wrong, this is still very much a portable hard drive, and can be transported very easily however as technology is developed items with the same specifications can be made smaller and smaller so maybe look into other options if size is an issue.
Another thing that could be seen as a flaw in portability is that the enclosure doesn't seem to be very rugged. It is made of two pieces of plastic that seem to creak when the slightest pressure is applied, even picking it up seems to put strain on it, so I don't think it would last very long if it was constantly being thrown in the bottom of a bag and taken places.
I do like the design of this hard drive. The top is covered in a shiny plastic and it slopes down at the front so it isn't just the same old boring box that most are. It actually looks good sitting on my desk. The Seagate logo is printed in white on the left of the front; this is the only identifying mark that can be seen without looking on the underside of the enclosure. I think this looks good and very sleek.
A single green LED is present on the top of this hard drive, glowing when connected and flickering when files are accessed or transferred. This is much like any other hard drives and works just as it should, although I don't really pay attention to it.
So I suppose I should take about actually using this hard drive. As I said before it works off of a single USB (2.0) cable and once connected my computer automatically installed the drivers without any problems. It is easy to transfer files to the drive, from windows just go into my computer and it should be there showing the free space and space used. I pretty much just use it like an extension to my computer so have different folders for "my music" and "my videos" etc. I won't bore people with transfer speeds as tech specs will be listed elsewhere but files transfer at a reasonable rate, I wouldn't say it's ultra-fast but that doesn't bother me.
The main concern I have with this drive is this: Sometimes my computer doesn't find it. By this I mean it's connected to my laptop, the LED on the drive is on and so getting power, however the hard drive doesn't show up on my computer. I have tried using different cables and the same thing happens. It is really frustrating as a few times I've been worried I've lost a lot of files that I only keep externally! This problem is usually resolved by uplugging and replugging the USB a few times and then the computer finds it.
All in all this drive does its job, good capacity and is portable. However it doesn't do its job as well as I'd hope. Teamed up with the problems with connectivity I'd have to give this product 3 stars.
Summary: Average hard drive
