Seagate External Portable Drive 320 GB
Advantages: so simple to use, brilliant backup and so small and light
Disadvantages: none (I have had it over a year and cannot find any)
Last year I have decided to update my desktop computer, as the old one had started to do funny things. And to be honest, there is only so many times I can take the side panel of the base so that the unit does not get over heated and switches my whole computer off.
Buying a new desktop computer presented me with problem of transferring all my files, documents and emails/email account to the new one. When I was researching on the internet I was left with 2 options:
a) to buy a cable which has to be attached to the new as well as old computer at the same time and is transferred through the cable or
b) to buy portable drive
I decided on the option b, because not only it transfers all the files, but is brilliant as a backup too (with option a, you can transfer but not save).
After browsing on PC World website I came across Seagate Expansion portable drive. Found the cheapest one that would do the job and went into the store to pick it up. It cost me just under £40
In the box was:
* Seagate Expansion portable drive 320GB
* quick start guide
* USB 2.0 cable
* 2 year limited warranty
* Windows XP,Vista
* Windows 7 operating system
* And USB port
First thing that took me by surprise is how small and compact it is. I expected something much bigger, so was pleased to find out that fitted in my handbag :) (8 cm x 14 cm x 1.5 cm). It is black and very light.
I almost panicked when I opened the box and saw instructions and no software to install. I had to look in the box again just to make sure that I haven't missed another set of instructions. These ones just showed a diagram with a laptop, USB cable and portable hard drive. Even I did not need instructions to tell me how to plug in the USB cable. However it did state that for all support and assistance you can visit www.seagtae.com website.
I plugged in the USB cable and I was amazed how simple the whole thing looked. It was just like using a memory stick. All I had to do is select the files, from my old computer, that I wanted to keep, click on them and drag them onto the portable drive. I did the same with my email account and all the photos that I kept in another section of my computer.
The nerve wrecking thing was, once I transferred all that on the hard drive...will it then transfer on my new desktop computer.
Me, being me, and not always trusting the new technology, had decided to keep the old computer while I set up the new one.
I couldn't believe how easy was to do the same process again, but this time from the portable drive to my new computer. All I had to do was to plug the portable hard drive through USB into my new computer. Same principle, click and drag. Even my email account and all my emails were transferred. Oh, and photos too. It was great. I was relived.
I now keep the portable drive as add on storage for my computer and it is great. It takes all the worries of ever loosing files,photos and emails if anything goes wrong with my computer. The only thing is now remembering to plug it in once amonth to update all the files and keep backup files up to date.
I would so recommend it.
It is small, compact and stylish, loads of storage and affordable.
Summary: would recommend
