worth buying for casual users, but speed freeks will want to look elsewhere

Seagate are one of the worlds biggest hard drive manufacturers. I have used seagate drives for many years and had no issues with them- this product is no exception.

It looks classy in high gloss plastic, but it is a fingerprint and scratch magnet- although as long as you don't throw it around it will stay in pretty good shape, and i've had mine nearly 2 years now.

I purchased this just before the disasters in japan which sent the price of hard drives sky rocketing, it was a good deal when I purchased it as it was on offer for £50.

The goflex concept is interesting- you buy a drive unit with a detachable interface, if you separate the drive and interface module you can chose to either plug the drive straight into a computer using the sata and power connections, or use the interface board to connect up to any bare 2.5" HDD or SSD- a nice touch, and it means I use the one cable to access my old laptop hard drives which are sitting around without a case to put them in. As long as seagate keeps supporting the goflex concept it is future proof, as my drive shipped with a usb 2 cable, which I can now upgrade to usb 3 if I want, or as my laptop doesn't have USB 3 i'll take firewire 800 (would use e-sata but it's not compatible with my macbook pro).

The drive itself is not the quickest, it's 5400rpm but it doesn't matter when you're connected by USB 2, any drive is limited to around 30mb/s over USB 2.

Overall a highly rated product, but if you need a very fast external drive there are better options

A fabulous gadget that is worth the money

We, as a family, each have a pc/laptop on which we were storing an ever increasing amount of music, photos, school work, study material etc. To ensure the safety of this data we decided to purchase an external hard drive.
The reason we chose this portable version was simply because it was portable and meant that anyone one of us could take it to work/school and access the data or add data without the need for various memory sticks. The FreeAgent GoFlex - Hard drive - 500 GB - external - Hi-Speed USB stood out as value for money as well as having a good storage capacity, the fact that it is a Dell product also helped us to make our choice. It is only 8x11 cm and when carried in the handy (hard backed) protective pouch that came with it, it fits easily in a bag or pocket.
A versitile product that has improved the security of our personal information no end.
